There Will Come Soft Rain Imagery Essay
Without imagery stories would be nothing but unimaginative and undescriptive text. In the short story “Sound of Thunder” a team of futuristic hunters travel in time to hunt a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The expedition doesn’t work out as planned. “There will Come Soft Rains” is a story about a technologically advanced home whose occupants are nowhere to be found. It is quickly realized something isn’t right. Ray Bradbury uses imagery often in both stories. It gives a sense of life and authenticity to the stories. Without imagery Ray Bradbury, the author of SoT and TCSR, couldn’t to bring life to the story.
Considering Bradbury uses imagery in “Sound of Thunder”, it makes readers experience the story and realize the true terror of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The T-Rex was a massive creature, its “...lower leg was a piston, a thousand pounds of white bone, sunk in thick ropes of muscle, sheathed in a gleam of pebbled skin like the mail of a terrible warrior”(Bradbury 77). In the morning the house made “...eight pieces of perfectly browned toast…”(Bradbury 87). Throughout the story, the house continued to go on like nothing happened to the people: making breakfast for them, doing the dishes, and cleaning the house. The author used Imagery to describe a homey and comforting feeling for the reader. Desolately, “The house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes”(Bradbury 88). Towards the end of the story the realization of what happened to the house starts to kick in. Imagery is used to create a foreboding feeling in the reader.
