Theory Analysis Paper Instructions & Rubric (20%)

Your paper is to be presented in APA 6th Edition scholarly format using the required headings shown below and should be no longer then 7-10 pages. All papers must be submitted to the correct DropBox in eCompanion. Be sure to follow the rubric below and include all the required information, in APA 6th Edition format with references. See syllabus for PPT or YouTube presentation about your theorist (10%).

Requirements 100 points (20%)
A. Theory/Author Name and Background (20 points)

Choose a nursing theory/theorist from your text or other nursing theory book, give the name of the theory/theorist and give crucial references for the original and/or current work of the theorist and other authors writing about the theory. Describe the theorist 's background as much as possible and how it impacted the theory development. (10 points)
Describe the theory in your own words. What phenomenon of concern or problems are addressed by the theory (10 points)
B. Theory Description (20 points)

Purpose - Why was the theory developed? Explain whether it is induction or deduction. Give evidence for your judgment. (5 points)
Concepts - What are the major concepts of the theory? How are they defined? (theoretically and/or operationally) Is the author consistent in the use of the concepts and other terms in the theory? (5 points)
Definitions- How are the concepts defined? Implicitly or explicitly? (5 points)
Relationships- Identify the relationships (propositions) among the major concepts (5 points).
C. Evaluation (20 points)

Assumptions - List explicit and implicit assumptions (values/beliefs) underlying the theory. On what assumptions does the theory build? (10 points)
Metaparadigm - If critiquing a nursing theory, does it have a description of the four metaparadigm concepts of nursing and how are they explained in the theory? Does it link to a non-nursing theory, is so what metaparadigm elements do

    A theory can be described as “A set of assumptions.” (Feist & Feist, 2006, p. 4) Since theories are built on assumptions rather than actual proven facts they are each open to the interpretation of the individual. A theory takes its shape and is a refection of the author showing his or her frame of reference and interpretation to the experience or theory (Feist & Feist, 2006). The more theories that develop the more approaches and interpretations that develops in order to see in contrast to each theory. A theorist needs to be able to have research to support their findings and be able to explain the data in which they have. For a theory to be useful it needs to generate research. If a theory is useful, others are interested and it creates attention where more research and data is formed. A theory must be falsifiable where it can either be confirmed or disconfirmed. A useful theory should organize data in order for clear directions to be followed. A useful theory also guides action in order for it to be able to find structure. A theory must be internally consistent with itself to be useful and once these steps have been met it becomes parsimonious.
