Themes In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
“Of Mice And Men” is a novel was written by John Steinbeck. It was published by Pascal Covici back in 1937. Steinbeck is an American author who has won a Nobel Prize for his writing in 1962. He was born on February 27, 1902, in the Salinas Valley. When Steinbeck was a child, he would observe the poor migrant workers traveling for work to try and earn a living. That's what inspired him to write “Of Mice and Men” as a book and play. The book is about two migrant workers, George Milton and Lennie Small, who travel to different ranches and farms around California during the time of Great Depression. Then lastly, there is Curley and his wife. Curley happens to be the son of the ranch owner/boss, is mean-spirited, and gets inflamed with jealousy often because of flirtatious Newlywed. One of the main themes in “Of Mice and Men” is Broken Plans. The title of this novel is actually inspired by a lyric in the poem “To a Mouse” written by Robert Burns. The lyric is, “The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” This is related to the fact that most of the main character’s in the story have these carefully planned yet unrealistic dreams."O.K. Someday—we're gonna get the jack together and we're gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an' a cow and some pigs and..." This is one of the dreams/plans that Lennie and George had made. I personally would recommend the book to anyone is open to reading it because it has an interesting storyline and hits so many different themes like loneliness and friendship, and broken dreams as previously stated. I agree with the author's perspective because a lot of the time people have dreams that most likely don’t come true or something holds us back and we have to change them to be more realistic given certain
