Theme Paragraph Example ENG 2DI
In a well-developed paragraph, state the theme of the story and explain how it is developed through the characters and action of the story. Use specific details and examples from the text to support your choice of theme.

Deceit is a predominant theme in the pilot episode of The
IT Crowd. The director shows audiences that one’s reputation is always stake, and the act of lying can completely destroy that reputation, and honesty is foundational for healthy relationships. The episode begins with Jen lying about her computer knowledge. This causes Jen to be placed within the I.
T. Department, an area which she has little knowledge about.
This is important because the episode begins with Jen’s reputation in jeopardy. Next, Jen’s situation worsens as she maintains this lie and attempts to fake her knowledge with Roy and Maus (the members of the I. T. Department). This is illustrated as Jen attempts to type on computers and talk on phones that are not plugged in. As Maus and Roy find out she lacks computer knowledge, her lie is discovered and reputation is marred. Finally, if lies destroy a reputation, honesty can rebuild it. the directors show that lying has ruined Jen’s reputation. Finally, Jen abandons her lie and finds her place with honesty. Jen acknowledges the value of her people skills and decides their department needs a representitive like her to interact with the rest of the company. Therefore, Jen’s honesty is what restores her reputation. In conclusion, one’s reputation is always stake, The I. T. Crowd demonstrates that lying destroys reputations and honesty can rebuild them.
