Theme Of Tension In Lord Of The Flies
Another thing that causes tension between the two boys are rules. Ralph believes there should be rules to keep everyone in order and make living on the island seem civilized. In chapter five during a fight between the boys, Ralph yells at Jack saying, “ you're breaking the rules!” and Jack responds with, “who cares” (Golding pg 91). These quotes prove that Ralph and Jack have tension between each other because they want two different things in life. Ralph wants to live with law and order and Jack just wants to fool around and have fun, because of this No one wants to help Ralph build shelters because they think it is boring and want to follow Jacks ways and have fun.

    The individuals responded to changes quite differently , Jack decided to respond to the challenge by using force/fear to get the leadership role, while Ralph employed rules, morals, and goals to escape the island all while remaining rational. Jack brought to the others protecting, food, and fun, trying to gain their loyalty, he was also set on completing the short term goal of getting food, while Ralph preserve the challenge of getting off island as his main goal and proceeded with ways of completing that with things such as the signal fire.     The main focus of most of the book and of Ralph has been to leave the island and be saved by outside people. All of these boys from ages six to twelve are stranded on the island and will not survive for a long time without rescuers.
