Theme Of Revenge In Hamlet
The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark was written by the world renowned, English poet, playwright, and actor, William Shakespeare, between 1599 and 1602. Scholars suggest that Shakespeare’s inspiration came from the legend of Amleth, which follows the storyline of The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark very closely. Shakespeare’s tragedy takes place in the Kingdom of Denmark, where we meet a multitude of seemingly ordinary characters, who ultimately meet untimely deaths. The play revolves around the concept of seeking revenge and the repercussions of their actions. Although Hamlet is a dark tragedy, it contains important life lessons. Although that was a common practice during that era, Hamlet is appalled by their display of love, furthering his desire for revenge on Claudius. Hamlet wishes to spare his mother because he claims that she is an ignorant and weak willed woman. Although incest is not directly tied to revenge, Shakespeare uses it to shows how corruptive revenge is. Hate is a disease that blackens your heart, and Shakespeare skillfully displays this throughout The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Revenge not only corrupts the world around you, but also the world inside of you. Hamlet’s passion for revenge corrupts his mind and soul, making him crazy. This contagious madness affects everyone in The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Although Hamlet claims to that his madness is just an act to ensure his revenge on Claudius, the desire to act insane is in itself a crazy idea. Perhaps Hamlet was a mad genius, but mad nonetheless.
