Theme Of Ransom Of Red Chief

“Fear of Failure” is a well known theme that we are all familiar with. Theme can be related to movies, books, and or plays. Every movie, book, or play has a main message known as the theme. The film, “Home Alone”, and the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief”, by O’Henry both share the same theme. One theme is “Never underestimate someone smaller than you”. In the film, “Home Alone”, Kevin outsmarts the robbers and he’s just a little boy. This proves the theme “Never underestimate someone smaller than you” because size doesn’t matter in this situation, how smart you are does. One example of verbal irony in the film “Home Alone” is when Kevin told his family he just “hung around” when they were gone. That is verbal irony because Kevin didn’t just hang around, he fought off the robbers. Verbal irony is also used in the short story “Ransom of Red Chief” because in the short story it says, “ They haven’t yet found out that the wolves have taken the little lamb from the flock.” That evidence supports verbal irony because Red Chief is more like the wolf and the kidnappers are more like the lamb. The film, “Home Alone” and the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” also have examples of situational irony. In the film, “Home Alone” Kevin’s parents leave him at home because they forgot him. This describes situational irony because normally parents wouldn’t forget their child at home, but Kevin’s parents did. There is also situational irony in the short story “Ransom of Red Chief” because on page 67 Red Chief says, “I’ll behave, Snake-eye, if you won’t send me home.” This is situational irony because when a kid gets kidnapped they would usually want to go home but Red Chief doesn’t want to. A way the film, “Home Alone” is more modern is because they use technology like telephones. In the film, “Home Alone” Kevin calls to order his food when he’s hungry. This is more modern because in the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” it says, “Also, I thought it best to send a stern letter to old man Dorset that day.” That proves that the film, “Home Alone” is more modern than the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” because in “Home Alone” they used a phone and in the short story, ”Ransom of Red Chief” they sent a letter. Another way the film, “Home Alone” is more modern is because they use cars and planes to get to places. One example from the film, “Home Alone” is when Kevin’s family drove to the airport in a car. This is more modern than the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” because on page 63 it says, “After dark I drove the buggy three miles to the little village where we had rented it.” This proves that the film, “Home Alone” is more modern because Kevin’s family used a car to transport but Bill and Sam used a buggy. The last way the film, “Home Alone” is made more modern than the short story, “Ransom of Red Chief” is because they both have a different setting.
