Theme Essay On The Outsiders
David Brin quoted "The worst mistake of first contact, made throughout history made by individual on both sides of every new encounter has been unfortunate habit of making assumptions. It is often proved fatal." This quote took major themes of The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton. Often times, people make judgements upon others by first impression. Those judgements can cause anger. This could lead to fighting, in his quote it can often be fatal. Fatal doesn't have to mean the end of a life, but an end to a friendship or a family bond. People do not see that everyone has problems that people hid from outsiders. This paper will discuss the three themes of The Outsiders, fighting never solves anything, everybody has problems, and don't pass judgement on another. No matter how big life's problems are fighting never solves anything. Ponyboy and the readers learn this lesson from many experiences throughout the book. Ponyboy shares the story about Johnny getting beat up. Cherry responded with "All Soc aren't like that... That's like saying all you greasers are like Dallas Winston." Ponyboy thought about that. People judge a group of individuals by an action of one. Ponyboy and Johnny saved kids from a church on fire. Jerry, the teacher, told Ponyboy that Johnny, Darry, and Ponyboy were heroes or sent from heaven. Ponyboy said no were murders, greasers, and wanted with the police. He believed so much on what the greasers were called, and he never believed to be anything else. Darry acted more like a Soc, the only thing keeping him a greaser was his family and the gang. Darry finished high school, played football, and had a scholarship lined up. All these examples show that people's perceptions of individuals can be completely different than how that individual may
