Thematic Unit of Study

During my practicum I observed a 5th grade science class that was studying the solar system. The class began with the teacher asking the students what they know about the solar system. Many students raised their hands and responded to the question when called on. After a few minutes of inquiring the teacher proceeded to show the students the solar system using the Solar System Scope on the Smart board. The classroom environment was filled with anticipation of actually getting to see what the solar system looks like. The students enjoyed seeing and feeling the effect of being in space where they could get a closer look at the planets. It was great to see a lot of enthusiastic and eager students. After showing the students how the solar system

There are several students with learning disabilities as well as English Language Learners. The teacher uses handouts with the moon phases already in order for those students who have learning disabilities. She also has a bilingual aid that helps her with ELL students, since I was observing and I am bilingual, the teacher asked if I could help the student by interpreting what needed to be done on the worksheet. I must admit, it was a wonderful experience. Although I needed to observe a lesson plan being taught, I was fortunate enough to actually get to work with students. I believe that with everything this teacher integrated into her science class, the unit was successful. The teacher provided many hands-on and group assignments which students really enjoyed and there was much encouragement and participation from both the teacher and students. It is amazing how students encourage one

I observed Mrs. Ball’s 7th grade science class at Helen Tyson Middle School on Thursday November 5, 2015. The classroom had a great climate and was decorated with interesting scientific educational material. She had the desks set up in organized rows with two kids per table. This set up allowed for less interaction between the kids because they were so spaced out, which seemed to keep them on task. The dynamics in the classroom were great. She connected well with each student and was interested in what they had to say. She was very in control of the class and the students seemed to respond well to her. The students interacted pleasantly with one another and were were all very welcoming. They came into class, sat down, and got right to work.…

According to Roberts and Foehr (2006) 33% of children under six have a television in their room, while 5% of children in the same age group have a personal computer in their room. Those numbers jump to 68% for television and 31% for computers when children reach the age of 8. As those numbers continue to rise and portable media like digital music players, cell phones, and portable video game players become more ubiquitous it is important to examine the possible effects of having media in a child’s bedroom and children using media alone in their room (Gutnick, et al, 2011).…

Both texts use presentational and language devices in order to promote light water valley and Lego land. The light water valley brochure uses informal language and an exciting tone to help persuade teachers in to organising reward trips. In contrast the Lego land promotional video is set to persuade parents/ families so the adults can relax in the hotel or lobby whilst the children enjoy themselves, playing in the resort. Therefore is suitable for all ages. One effective presentational device used in the Lego Land promotional video is the logo. The logo is near to the sun which connotes that the Lego land is in another dimension. Furthermore, the logo shows Lego Land is so irresistible and so wonderful that it cannot be contrasted to earth and that Lego Land has taken us a life of its own. It is further enhanced by the way that a flag is conserved on the logo. This is similar to when an astronaut reaches the moon they put their flag to indicate their journey and accomplishment and this is linked to the way that, by reaching Lego Land and experiencing Lego Land it gives an individual a sense of triumph. This is compared with the way that the Light Water Valley brochure has a logo which has swirls that appear to be coming out of it, which makes the reader link it to a portal or vortex. The effect this has is that it seems like a portal to another world or dimension, therefore sending the message that Light Water Valley is ‘out of this world’. Also it gives the audience a sense of sovereignty and freedom and makes the reader assume they are about to go on a journey. These logos are vital because they help the audience to identify these businesses with small images. This brand credit means that the logos get stuck in the audience’s head and help them to keep in mind the business from a small clue, the logo. The Light Water Valley logo is a bright oval shape with multi-coloured lettering and a simple explicit drawing of a roller coaster in the middle. While this theme…

There were two Caucasian students, seven African-American students, and six Mexican students. Mrs. Brodie was the teacher and Ms. Johnson was the teacher assistant. The classroom was large and there was plenty of space for the children to move about. The classroom structure was very similar to that of the 3-year-old classroom that I observed in my first field observation. There was also a carpet on the floor for circle time and the classroom was divided up into centers as well. The centers were clearly labeled. Some of the centers included reading, art, science, manipulatives, and blocks. As I stated before it was very similar to the 3-year-old classroom set-up. The classroom was filled with print and there were many different aspects of cultural references which included posters in the Spanish language and books that represented the different diversity of all of the students. The classroom was like the 3-year-old classroom amplified. I am thinking that maybe because the school is state funded that it why they do have so many more materials than a regular preschool classroom. The science area even had a telescope in the center. The children knew what it was and what it was used…

Our school has an ICT policy that gives guidelines for all when working with ICT in the classroom or ICT suite. All adults in the school have to sign a form to say that when using ICT equipment in school we will not access any inappropriate content and will only use the resources in school for educational purposes. All ICT problems should be reported to the relevant ICT team and if we cannot resolve it ourselves then we have an additional specialist who comes in once a week to look at issues that we cannot resolve in house.…
