Theft Observation
1. At 2:50 pm on November 9th, 2015, we got a call about a theft from Scott Carpenter. This was at 123 Main Street and the theft was of his car, a cherry red 1967 Ford Mustang licence plate JEP-097. Mark and I arrived and Scott invited us in and told us that he was calling around to find his car. Scott came home after his night-shift and the Mustang that he parked along the side (front) of his house was missing. Cathy walked in shortly after we arrived and she was gathering her belongings. She stated she took the Mustang and was no longer together with Scott. Scott and Cathy admitted they have been fighting and Cathy was upset about Scott’s working habits, to the point she felt like she was being ignored by him. Scott did not want Cathy leaving

Mark knocked and Scott greeted us at the door and invited us into his dwelling, so no authority was needed because consent was given. We shacked hands with Scott after he was done on the phone. As soon as Cathy entered the house, I tried to isolate Scott and ask more questions about the car and what was going. I used hand gestures and summarized what Scott told me to make sure he understood I was listening. It became obvious that all I knew was that they were fighting, so I let Scott and Cathy talk it out near the kitchen where I tried to precipitate the yelling as much as I could by stating, “Yelling is not helping this situation” in a calm voice. I used Scott’s name as much as I could to get his attention. When things became heated, I stepped in front of Scott in an attempt to block his view. Things eventually moved over to the door, as Cathy came out of the kitchen and headed for the door. Again, I tried to stay between Scott and Cathy. I learned that I cannot get people’s attention, even when I am in their face and yelling their name. People choose to pay attention to me and recognize my role as an officer only when I act inappropriately. I do not know what I cannot do, an example is how forceful or physical I can get to separate and get people’s attention, understand at what point someone is considered common law (No proof of being common law, so far as I know, the car is his), or when to be an authoritarian.
