The Yellow Wallpaper vs. Story
Comparison and Contrast Essay “The Yellow Wallpaper” vs. “The Story of an Hour” “The Yellow Wallpaper”, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and “The Story of an Hour”, by Kate Chopin, are alike in that both of the women in the stories were controlled by their husbands which caused them to feel an intense desire for freedom. Both stories were also written from a feminist point of view. However, the women in the stories had different life changes and different responses to their own freedom as a result of that change. In both stories the women’s husbands had direct control over their lives. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” the narrator’s husband controlled her both mentally and physically. He does not allow her to have any sort of mental or physical stimulation. She is virtually imprisoned in her bedroom, supposedly to allow her to rest and recover her health. She is forbidden to work and not even supposed to write. She does not even have a say in the location or décor of the room she is forced to spend almost even moment in. Furthermore, visitors are absolutely not allowed. She says, “It is so discouraging not to have any advice and companionship about my work…but he says he would as soon put fireworks in my pillow-case as to let me have those stimulating people about now”(Gilman 635). Mrs. Mallard in “The Story of an Hour” had to deal with the same sort of affliction. Her husband had control over her “body and soul”. She felt that he lived her life for her and did “not believe that anyone had the right to impose a private will on a fellow creature” (Chopin 13). McLauchlin 2 This control caused both women to long for freedom from their husbands’ oppressive behavior. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” it seems that the narrator wishes to drive her husband away. She explains,

Both "The Story of an Hour" and Charlotte Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" display women discovering freedom from society's standards during the setting's time period. In "The Story of an Hour," Louise locks herself in her room after discovering that her husband has died and at that point in the story she finds herself more confident in herself. She exclaims, "Free! Body and soul free!" (Chopin 83). After she believed her husband died she finally had reason to take initiative in life and did not have to live a life were nothing was expected of her. She found freedom in locked quarters. Just as John's wife did in "The Yellow Wallpaper." As the wife's sickness progressed, her anxiety over the yellow wallpaper increased. The patterns developed within the walls showed the image of a woman creeping along, and as the shadows of the bars from the window cast across the woman. This can symbolize how she is like the shadow, imprisoned in her room and mansion. As time moved forward, the wife fully identifies with the image in the wall, and by the end of the story she locks herself in her room and frees the woman behind the bars by pealing off most of the wallpaper. In doing so she believes she has freed herself and says, "… I've pulled off most of the paper, so you can't put me back!" (Gilman 173).…

In the “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Charlotte Gilman writes about a woman who sees herself in a haunting wallpaper and she wants to be free, and the struggle between her and John. John treats her like she is his child instead of his wife. By any man treating their wife like John does will drive her insane. That is exactly what John did, drove his wife crazy enough to make her want to stay in her room, lay in the bed, and stare at the wallpaper. Her husband does not treat her right, talks to her like a child, and makes her stay in her room all alone.…

Despite mankind’s attempts to create equality throughout history, today's society seems as far away from achieving that goal as it was years ago. The quote by George Orwell - “No advance in wealth, no softening of manners, no reform or revolution has ever brought human equality a millimeter nearer” - shows just how much more people have to do to create a society that is equal for all. An example of an attempt to shed light gender inequality is The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Stetson. It is a semi autobiographical literary piece which was written after the author underwent a tough period in her life comprised of psychosis, divorce and the loss of custody of her child. The story focuses on the life of a young married woman who, over…

In The yellow wallpaper, the protagonist is introduced as a woman with seemingly a lot of literary potential from what we get to know about her passion for writing, enthusiastic and detailed observations of her surroundings and her vivid imagination. However, she is in an unfortunate situation where she is not allowed any mental activity, because it is believed by her husband and society to be the right treatment for women with a nervous condition. As an example she is told by her husband John, a physician and man of “high standing”, that: […] with my imaginative power and habit of story-making, a nervous weakness like mine is sure to lead to all manner of excited fancies, and that I ought to use my will and good sense to check the tendency. In other words, the protagonist is ordered by her husband to restrain herself, which can also be interpreted as a general portrait of the repression of women in society.…

Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” and John Clive’s film “The Yellow Wallpaper” are similar and different in many aspects. The main plot for example, is extremely similar in both versions. John, one of the main characters, is a doctor and tries to help his wife, the narrator, from depression he believes she suffers from. His treatment requires virtually no activity, and that she does nothing at all for several weeks. In order to make this possible, John purchases a large estate, which is isolated and quiet. He is constantly in and out of the house due to his job, so he creates a strict schedule for his wife to abide by. His possessive control over his wife’s actions is apparent in both the short story and film. It is his control that causes his wife to sneak around, for example beginning her secretive journal, which she believes relieves her mind. Clearly, these two people are not meant to be together due to their opposing views. By the end of the story, John had driven Charlotte so mad that he caught her tearing the wallpaper off the wall in her room. The little aspects are what differed between the short story and film. Things like how the house maid acted, different symbolisms, and the intentions of different characters are obvious examples. However, the similarities in John’s character between the short story and film of “The Yellow Wallpaper” are the most important portion in analyzing these two pieces. How he treats his wife, the narrator, and how he is portrayed are the main similarities in his character.…

Charlotte Gilman experienced depression in her life and it inspired her to write “The Yellow Wallpaper.” The short story is based on a woman, not given a name in the text, who is very dependent on her husband. The narrator plays a gender role that is degraded by her successful husband, who is a doctor, because she is a female. “The Revolt of Mother” and “The Yellow Wallpaper” both share a similar issue of the portrayal of women in which she is being undermined by her husband continuously, leading to rebellion where they break the rules of society in order for their voices to be heard. Both short stories show the inferior social status and roles of women in the late nineteenth century, making this period a male-dominated society. In the late nineteenth century, women knew their place and were dependent upon their husbands. They must cater to them, cook, clean, care for the children, and please the husband in any way possible. In both stories the women follow their husband’s wishes and demands, until finally they can’t take it anymore. “The Yellow Wallpaper” demonstrates freedom and independence when the narrator liberates herself to tear down the wallpaper, freeing herself, as well as completing her descent into insanity. In “The Revolt of Mother”, Sarah’s freedom begins when she finally decides to move her family into the barn, where she takes a stand against her authoritarian husband. Throughout both of these short stories, it shows the reader how society viewed women, how they were expected to act, and how they were treated…

She is diagnosed with “temporary nervous depression and a slight hysterical tendency” (Gilman 221). In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the journal she kept reveals how much she lets her husband controls her life. One example of this is when she writes, “I…am absolutely forbidden to work until I am well again. Personally, I disagree with their ideas…I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good” (Gilman 2). She obviously has her own different opinions, but she never speaks of them openly. As a result, she only writes them down in her journal. This is why she takes the responsibility of the result that her husband controls her so much because she never fight back about her own opinions. She wants to have change; however, she lets John control her life and make her unhappy. She even knows that she is angry with him, but she just blames it on a nervous condition that John says she has. The real reason she is angry with him is the fact that he does not let her do what she wants to do, but she denies this. Another example, “I don’t like our room a bit. I wanted one downstairs…But John would not hear of it” (Gilman 3) also shows how much she lets her husband control her. Once again she disagrees with his judgment, but goes along with him anyways, and this is one of the main things she should have done for herself. Because she goes along with his judgment, her condition begins to worsen.…
