20 years ago, a man saved her life, by putting his own life in danger. He ran across 4 lanes of freeway traffic, to bring her to safety after being in a car accident that could have killed her. The man was a total stranger, who took off after making sure she was okay – she never even got his name. Marsh wonders why he did so and started questioning why some people have a different level of altruism than others.…
When arguing, do you often keep talking until your opponent realizes they're wrong? Or do you give examples in Logical, Ethos, or Pathos relation? Jay Heinrichs, author of Thank You For Arguing : What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson can teach us about the art of persuasion demonstrates and teaches the basics of arguing by showing Ethos, Pathos, And logos. Ethos meaning credibility, “Pathos” as in emotional, persuasion, And lastly Logical arguing. Jay Heinrichs has a total of seven books published, he’s a former editor of Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, and group publisher of the Ivy League Magazine Network Heinrichs goes in depth of how Aristotle has displayed three types of arguing being that “Blaming” is first which is spoken in past tense, “Demonstrative argument” which is in present tense mainly based on morality, “Deliberate argument” which is future tensed good or bad choices.…
After reading “the question: do you agree with Jason Geller that when individuals receive help, they should ‘pay it forward’”, I agree with him because I recently read the book Give and Take. The giver who pays the support is a smart giver, but the giver who only pays it back may become a doormat.…

In his book, People Care, Thom Dick shows us that while it is imperative to know and perform all the medical procedures well, it is also important to treat patients with kindness and respect. He points out that most people don’t remember much about medical procedures performed, but they do remember how they were treated. Also, he demonstrates that how patients are treated plays a big role in whether or not they decide to pursue malpractice litigation against healthcare providers. If patients are handled with gentleness and respect, they are more likely to forgive mistakes.…
Some people today often think about why do we have laws? and do we really need them? Frank Trippetts explains why many people today don't follow the laws he also talks about the importance of the laws. Trippetts argument is to show people why they should not break the law no matter how big or small the law is. He goes on explaining how millions of americans never think twice before breaking the law. The author's tone is critical to the millions of americans. Some people might think that the laws are unnecessary and people should be responsible enough to not do uneducated choices, they have no idea of what life would be without law.…
The act of kindness this student performed was one she does often and without a second thought. Whenever she sees an elderly person in a grocery store that appears to be looking for something or cannot reach an item she assists in any capacity she can. Her father taught this to her as the golden rule, and it is a part of her personality makeup. Her actions could be considered altruism that is selfishness in reverse. An altruistic person, he or she is helpful and concerned even when no benefits are expected in return (Myers, 2010).…
In his article “Famine, Affluence, and Morality,” Peter Singer outlines his argument for helping those in need in the global community. His main argument is that humans can stop suffering based on our moral decisions.1 Singer calls for the definition of ‘charity’ in our society to have moral implications. People should give governmental and privately. all need to give to charity and all at the same time.…
Wilson initially argues, “It is only the extreme act that lies beyond the innumerable smaller performance of kindness and giving that bind societies together”(75). The literal concept of altruistic suicide can generally be accepted as noble, but in the future of humanity, altruism will reach beyond the realm of what it is understood to be today. Because of the scale of altruism Wilson discusses, humanity will continue to value altruistic suicide as the most honorable means of…
Across the United States, everyday lives would change dramatically if Peter Singer’s theory was set in place. He brings to the reader’s attention that there is a difference between duty and charity. This thought…

In the short story “Truth” written by W.P Kinsella, the story has started by documenting Silas and Frank’s experience in managing the Hobbema Wagonburners’ hockey team. The audiences learn the “truth” about who is really to blame for starting the riot in Saint Edouard’s Hockey Arena when Silas and Frank let Mad Etta to be the goalie for their team and beat the Saint Edouard’s team. This story is created with humour though the author mixes prose and dialect to get the readers into the world of misunderstood Aboriginal people. Also, Kinsella demonstrates absurd view of the world and concerns regarding culture conflicts between Aboriginal and White people in North America. Kinsella achieves this effect through his use of narrative point of view, plot, conflicts, settings, themes, and characters throughout the story.…
Singer argues that many people are not willing to put aside their wants, and make a sacrifice to help impoverished children. Now, evolutionary psychologists tell us that human nature just is not sufficiently altruistic to make it plausible that many people will not sacrifice so much for stranger (327). This statement saddens me, because what if that is your or your family, and somebody thought of you all strangers, and would not want to help your family out of poverty? Singer then explains that we ought to do things that predictably most of wouldn’t (327). Majority feel that if does benefit them in the end then why bother. Honestly, donating will benefit you it makes you feel like a better person, and you have helped an individual in need. Sometimes you should sacrifice your wants for others needs. As singer states the life of a child is more important then going to fancy restaurants, the next time you dine out know that you could…
3. The proper method of judging when or whether one should help another person is by reference to one’s own rational self-interest and one’s own hierarchy of values: the time, money or effort one gives or the risk one takes should be proportionate to the value of the person in relation to one’s own happiness. What might the social and political outcome be if that approach were implemented? As far as a political outcome is concerned, I feel that this approach has already been implemented. Politicians only care about themselves and what they can get out of the deal, as power and greed take presence before the people…
