We arrived today on the island of Roanoke. Queen Elizabeth of England had sent us over here to start a colony in the new world. There were about one hundred and twenty people on board that tiny vessel consisting of men, women, and children. I am very happy to make it onto land after so long on the water in a crowded ship. The land is dense with forests, and the bodies of water that surround us are beautiful. John White has been named governor of our colony.…

In many ways, Ellis has managed to create a detailed and carefully illustrated history of the American Revolution and the people and events that surrounded it in the parameters of a series of stories that few have ever heard. Depictions of the duel between Hamilton and Burr that changed the strictly passive coping mechanism of the revolutionary generation give a helpful insight into the minds of those who contributed to the creation of such a young nation. Earlier, in 1790, a great deal was struck in the home of Thomas Jefferson, and it was decided by Hamilton and Madison that the future of the capital of the United States was to be near the Potomac, and the fiscal plan was soon to be labeled assumption. Constantly changing and improving from previous British government, the deal showcased America and the revolutionary generation’s ability to adapt to quickly changing tides. Another issue that baffled many a member of Congress and the Constitutional commission was slavery and how to approach it, and the compromise between Madison and the House in 1790 proved how loyal the “Founding Fathers” were to their Constitutional roots.…

Throughout history, many people from the same country have immigrated to different lands where their new lifestyles had very little in common. This was obvious in the settlement of the New England and Chesapeake colonies before 1700 which caused the development of dissimilar societies. The people of New England and the Chesapeake colonies formed different governments upon arrival to North America. They had different motives and incentives for immigrating to America. The composition of the colonists of New England and the Chesapeake area were nothing like one another during the settlement of the colonies.…

America is founded in immigration. Aside from those of pure Native American descent, every one of its citizens has origin elsewhere. Their motivations for leaving their birth land are all but unknown, and are the core of what makes America. All of them can be rooted to an expression with many names; freedom, opportunity, and liberty.…

The novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee conveys injustice and racism through the eyes of a young curious girl is trying to understand the world. John Winthrop was the power holding leader for the English colonists while traveling and arriving in The New World. When the colonists arrived, his ideals for the society were to have a community based on unity and religion and create "A city upon a hill." He believed that leaving the ideals of England's society, would ultimately help him to achieve the city that the colonists strived for. However, with his demanding notions for a unified community and high demand for everyone to have personal relationship with God, he created a similar society to what the colonists had known in The Old World.…

Early America was a time of hardship, exploration and a deep belief in God, this is best portrayed through is literature. Within early American literature there are many similarities and differences from the work of William Bradford to John Smith. “In sundry of these storms the winds were so fierce and the seas so high, as they could not bear a knot of sail, but were forced to hull for divers days together. And in one of them, as they thus lay at hull in a mighty storm, a lusty young man called John Howland, coming upon some occasion above the gratings was, with a seele of the ship, thrown into sea; but it pleased God that he caught hold of the topsail halyards which hung overboard and ran out at length.” William Bradford Of Plymouth Plantation…

    Essay On Chimney Swifts

I decided I wanted to build the chimney swift tower during an Envirothon meeting when Judy Semroc of the Natural History Museum in Cleveland brought up concerns about taking down the masonry smokestack on the side of the school. It was home to many chimney swifts, but the interesting thing is, only one mating pair nests in a tower, no matter the size, though hundreds more may roost there. I really liked this project because it was something I actually cared about, and was something different. I spoke to some people from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for funding, but they referred me to the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). The NWTF and the Home Depot fully funded my project, so I didn’t need anything from the Chardon VFW (who…

The Wickersham Commission is the popular name for the National Commission on Law Observance and Enforcement, which was appointed by President Herbert Hoover in 1929. The commission, which derived its name from its chairperson, former U.S. Attorney General George Wickersham, conducted the first comprehensive national study of crime and law enforcement in U.S. history. Its findings, which were published in fourteen volumes in 1931 and 1932, covered every aspect of the criminal justice system, including the causes of crime, police and prosecutorial procedures, and the importance of probation and parole.…

“The Library Card” was a powerful story that showed how reading can influence and affect its readers. While I was reading this story, I was forced to think about how horribly African Americans were treated and the struggles they had to face. To me, this means that it sparked his curiosity on the meaning of life, questions about fate, and even examining his own life. I believe Richard Wright was trying to make sense of the meaning of life and the purpose of his own way of living. I began to notice Wright was trying to find the reasoning for racial segregation and the judging of one’s character based on race, religion, and even his way of life.…

Elements of Irony in Native Son Native Son paints a disturbing, harsh picture of life within the "Black Belt" of Chicago in the 1940s. Wright uses irony; sometimes subtly and at other times obviously to shape the view of the reader and as a foreshadowing mechanism. From our initial scene to Bigger 's death, the technique of irony employed by Wright is effective, and devastating.…
