The show’s leading couple, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz (native of Santiago de Cuba, Cube) had already been married for nearly ten years when they brought their idea to CBS for a “modern family” kind of show that was comedic, but also a portrayal of everyday life in the 50s. It was actually originally turned down by producers for being too “exogamous”. The culture then was still very segregated and conservative, and interracial couples were almost taboo. Desi, a man quite obviously of Cuban decent, was considered “too ethnic” for the channel to endorse.…

Intertextuality suggest that all works of literature are in some way connected and are telling the same story, but in different viewpoints. Whether the author is aware or not, they are influenced from other works. It could be from a song heard, a movie seen, or a book read, but the author will in some way intertwine other works within their writing consciously or not. In Susan Glaspell’s short story “A Jury of Her Peers” and Helen Reddy’s song “I Am Woman”, intertextuality is not necessary evident, however, you can derive the same meanings from the two. While Glaspell may be unaware of her message of the empowerment of women, especially being that the story was written in 1917, Reddy’s is quite clear.…

Hillary Clinton and Jane Addams both saw a need for labor reform nearly one hundred years apart. Jane Addams drew her focus on child labor. The industrial revolution brought the concept of child labor. Children were working in places such as mills and factories, with unhealthy working conditions and little to no wages. Childhood is the most carefree part of a person's life. Children are instinctively pure creatures, unperturbed by the troubles that may surround them. Like the quote above states, the incidents they go through are simply black and white, good and bad. However, as they grow older, they lose their innocent state of mind. They are suddenly thrown into a world where they are constantly struggling to defeat the odds and are desperately seeking answers to life's questions. Is there anyone that helps them during this difficult time, to see the "shades of gray?" Of course, there can be many answers to this question, but I think the single most influential person who guides a child through this stage is a family member. Family is one of the most important factors that help shape a person's life. In the critically lauded and moving tales of "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee and "Bless Me, Ultima" by Rudolfo Anaya, the protagonists are all children, newly thrust into the world, faced with extreme obstacles and situations that test their character. Each one deals with these obstacles in different ways because of their different personalities. However, one thing is certain--the main characters of both novels overcome their hurdles and develop a strong level of morality along the way because they are guided by the love, understanding, and experience of their family members.…

A road movie consists several characteristics. Starting off with the idea of an escape, Thelma and Louise were persistent in embarking their fishing trip journey as a sense of liberation from the domineering and uncommitted men in their lives. The scene where Darryl told Thelma he does not care about special dinner and might not be home for dinner clearly shows how Darryl is dominant over Thelma, causing Thelma to be scared of asking her husband’s permission for the trip. Whereas when Louise’s received an answering machine instead of a pick-up from Jimmy denotes that Jimmy is not fully committed to Louise.…
