The Wall's Family
The quote " dancing along the border of turbulence and order " is relevant to how the Wall's family survives because this is the way they choose to live.
With the Wall's family always on the move from place to place, they could never get the opportunity to actually settle down as a family. After being in a hospital for a few relaxing weeks, Jeannette gets some surprising news, “... Dad appeared alone in the doorway of my room. He told me we were going to check out Rex Walls style.. Our car, a beat up Plymouth we called the Blue Goose, was parked around the corner, the engine idling. Mom was up front, Lori and Brian in the back with Juju, Dad slid across the seat next to mom and took the wheel. You don’t have to worry anymore baby’ Dad said

The author does not outright identify and describe this unfortunate historical event but readers can use the imagery and symbols along with their historical knowledge to be able to determine that the author could be writing about a person in an internment or concentration camp. The poem is universal in the fact that it may not be interpreted in a historical way by one that does not have as much knowledge about history. These type of readers may interpret it as the wall being an obstacle in the way of a goal. This aspect of the poem makes it very interesting because it can be interpreted in many unique ways to different readers.…

When the audience clicks on the TIME photo album “The Great Wall of America” the caption reads, “TIME Photographer Anthony Suau tracks the progress of the US effort to build a permanent barrier between the United States and Mexico” (TIME). Suau predicts that the audience becomes intrigued by the building of the wall and their views against immigration because he shows the hardships of immigration. The author as well as the audience both holds meaning towards seeing what the building of the wall looks…

Boy girl wall is a play by Australian playwrights Matthew Ryan and Lucas Stibbard. It was first produced by The Escapists for Metro Arts Independents, Brisbane. It is a comedy about the unfortunate dealings of Thom and Alethea, two adults that live in the same apartment building, trying desperately to keep their lives from falling apart. The physical struggles mentioned above also come together to form the large struggle of finaical insecurity. Walls expresses in the novel that she along with the rest of her family went without food for weeks because of the lack of funds. Jeannette describes a scence where in her elementary school bathroom she would pick out the leftover food that the other children would throw out. Jeannette shows her lack of understanding when her peers “tossed away all this perfectly good food; apples, hard-boiled eggs, packages of peanut-butter crackers, sliced pickles, half-pint cartons of milk, cheese sandwiches with just one bite taken out because the kid didn’t like the pimentos in the cheese” (173). She points out that sometimes there was more food in the trash then she could of eaten, this is when she begins to take some of the food to her brother to ensure that he was eating as well, but she does not take any home for her mother. With the state of the Walls’ finaicial insecurity comes the the undeniable fact that they were unable to pay rent. Therefore the Walls family moved quite often to avoid the bill collecters or as her father…

Her parents explained to her that she would have to leave most of her belongings behind and to not get too attached to anything for that reason, not to mention, they didn’t have the money to purchase anything nice for them. For example, they never got presents on Christmas. “ They couldn’t afford expensive presents, and they didn’t want us to think we weren’t as good as other kids who, on Christmas morning, found all sorts of fancy toys under the tree that were supposedly left by Santa Claus” (39). Her parents told her this, for one, they couldn’t afford anything, and second, they didn’t believe on spending their money on anything that wasn’t a necessity. Her parents found a way to make up for the lack in gifts by giving them things that they could treasure forever. For instance, the Walls spent Christmas looking up into the Arizona night sky full of stars, and Jeannette’s father said she could pick any star she wanted as her Christmas present and said ‘Years from now, when all the junk they got is broken and long forgotten, Dad said, you’ll still have your stars’ (41). The way they viewed it was that it had more sentimental value and was more meaningful because it would last for years to come. As parents, the Walls were trying to show their children at a young age that they don’t need money to be…

Every time the going got rough, they would just leave behind the life they had created in their temporary town and start anew in a new town. Jeannette loved the running, because it meant more time with her family and being in the desert; also it meant they were closer to building the “Glass Castle”. The Walls’ father, Rex, always promised his children that all of this running was just a temporary measure, “All we had to do was find gold, Dad said… he’d start work on our Glass Castle.” (Walls 25) This dream represented Rex’s hope to be something to his children, but his drinking keeps on prolonging their dreams by keeping him unmotivated. However, Jeannette ignores her father’s drinking as a child, and thinks “...Dad was perfect, although he did have what Mom called a little bit of a drinking situation.” (Walls 23) During one Christmas, the Walls had no money at since Rex had lost his job; so Rex decided to take each of his children out into the desert and have them pick out their own star. Jeannette accidentally picked out Venus instead of a star, but Rex decided that she can have Venus, even if it was a planet. This memory shows how Rex wishes he could give more to his family. When he had nothing, he managed to give his children one of the best Christmas presents they could have…

So I will let it alone and talk about the house.”(Perkins Gilman) In this quote we can examine another form of content in the story “ The Yellow wallpaper”. Control is a major thing that happens in this story. Her husband controls her every move. This is why she goes crazy in the end. He pushes her over the edge and causes a woman to crumble. When we are pushed down so far, it is hard for us to stand back up and fight. She had no more fight in her and let the ways of husband in.…

Walls uses characterization in her text to describe her parents’ personality and who they were to her during her childhood. Jeannette’s mother, Rose Mary, was portrayed as a mother who did not want to be a mother. She was usually neglecting them to spend her time with more enjoyable things like painting to be an artist or writing to become an author. Throughout the text, she is self-centered and doesn’t act like any normal nurturing mother would. When her husband lost his job, her children were starving for food and be willing to eat anything, then Brian discovers she was sneaking herself large Hershey bars without offering any to her hungry children. Then she attempts to justify herself, “I can’t help it. I’m a sugar addict, just like your father is an alcoholic.” (174) Mary Rose usually made herself the victim, especially when she pitches a number of excuses to make herself seem less guilty. Another example of her selfishness is when Brian and Jeannette find a two- carat diamond ring that was worth more than their house. Rose Mary decided to keep the ring to replace her pawned wedding ring even after the kids argued it could get them a lot of food, and replied to them, “self-esteem is even more vital than food.”(186) Jeannette’s father, who adored her very much, was Rex Walls. Rex Walls was a dreamer just like his wife, but instead he believed he would someday strike gold with his invention, “The Prospector.” He favored Jeannette most out of his three children and even had a pet name for her, “Mountain Goat.” They also dreamed together about building their dream house in a large desert, the…

Walls consumes the memoir with depictions of her parent's eccentric parenting styles. Although not a drunk like her father she describes her mother as possessing the "mentality of a four year old" while at the same time being "incredibly advanced intellectually." Despite her intelligence, her mother sits around and watches Jeannette's father squander their money on beer and cigarettes while she tries to develop her "hidden artistic talents." Even with a teaching degree she refuses to get a job until begged to do so by her starving children. Not only does she refuse to get a job when she knows her own children are hungry, but in one part of the memoir she actually stoops so low as to…

For this assignment I was asked to pick a fictional movie that related to sustainability, climate change, resource depletion, and threats involving the environment and health. Wall-e is a movie set in the future where earth has become uninhabited due to people not recycling at all, releasing too much greenhouse gases from factories, and contaminating the water which made the earth become too much of a hazardous area for people or animals to live in. The earth shown in this movie is a world full of garbage everywhere from people not recycling or throwing away their garbage. The movie in this sky has also changed into dark and foggy air due to greenhouse gases. As for the water in this movie, the water such as the sea and oceans become contaminated due to people spilling chemicals such as oil into the oceans and the trees were cut down which made people not get enough clean air. The environment was basically in bad condition because humanity decided not to take care of earth. As a result of this catastrophe, humanity decided to move into space and live there with technology that allows humanity to do less physical activities/activity which made them obese, have weak limbs, barely be able to move, and not have the abilities the skills that they once have aquired. It was like this until an old robot left behind on earth by humanity finds a sign of life which was a plant. The robot then manages to get into the space shuttle and show the plant to the people in space which makes them return to earth and clean it up. In some way, this movie reminds me of two other movies known as The Lorax and Elysium because the earth in the Lorax, people had to buy fake fresh air because someone cut down all the trees which is slightly like the world or wall-e because the earth became so bad that even plants were inexistent. Wall-e is also a lot like the movie Elysium because it is a world that went through the exact same things…
