The vision of mirza
I used to be insecure of other’s looks. Since Puberty strikes me, I become more curious of what I look like. Am I pretty? Am I fit? Am I flawless? Hmm.. My teeth are so doomed. The lower teeth are farther to the tongue than my front teeth, causing my friends to tease and call me a “babalu”. I felt jealous about some pretty girls who have perfect teeth. Other one is my hair. My hair is also doomed. It’s freakin’ kinky. Not curly, but kinky. I need to get my hair rebond once a year just to look nice. I hated it when other girls have nice hair even without effort. Last thing I was insecure of is the pimple free-face of others. I am the only pimple prone girl at home. And it seems like everyone I see has skinny smooth face. Later on I realized that I should not care about the looks. Being pretty is not written in the bible. It wasn’t stated that “Pretty and Skinny People will be saved in the day of salvation” I should be satisfied of what I look like, Because not all people are blessed to have a leg, or a hand, teeth, or even a face. Blessed in anyway, GOD says I’m beautiful-

When I was a middle school student, I cared too much about my appearance so, I watched a movie Shallow Hal. In the movie, there is a superficial man who always judges other people’s appearance. When he was young, his father passed away and father’s will become his principle in life. Inspired by his father’s will: ‘Hot young tail. That’s what it’s all about’, the father made Hal promise to date only beautiful women. One day, he met an American life coach Tony Robbins and the life coach enabled him to see a beauty inside by hypnotizing Hal. After that, he met a Rose who is slender and beautiful trophy blonde and he started to date her. However, his friend, Mauricio confessed that Hal was hypnotized by Tony Robbins. Hal began to see Rose’s truth that she didn't have any attractive aspect and leaves Rose. The ending of this story is that he realized his true love for Rose and begs for mercy and they reconcile. This movie is a very good example that depicts frankly how we discriminate people because of their height and weight.…

Theres no denying it -- everyone wants to be beautiful. A simple flip through any magazine confirms this as beauty ads for new hair products, cosmetics, and fashion fill every other page. What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you pleased, or do you immediately come up with an endless list of insecurities? As a child one of my favorite memories was laying around the house with my older sister on rainy days. We would leave the windows open so we could hear the rain coming down on the tin roof over our patio, while watching reruns of our favorite tv show “America's Next Top Model”. I always thought that these women were gorgeous and I would catch myself constantly comparing their looks to my own. I wanted to be just like them until I realized the unrealistic expectations that they had to live up to. A sizeable butt and breasts, but not too large; they have got to be proportional. A skinny waist, impeccable hair, blemish free face although even with clear skin you are expected to cake on makeup because no one is actually pretty without mile long eyelashes, the perfect smoky eye, and exemplary contouring. Society has idolized these things as “beautiful” and shamed the girls that do not meet these standards; however, society should be making everyone feel confident in their bodies. Girls need to know that it is okay not to have an “hourglass figure” so they don’t…

Women are also often objectified in particular, within men’s magazines, where a woman’s physical attractiveness is used to sell products or promote a brand. You can’t help but ask yourself why companies purposely choose to promote women as sexual objects within their advertising? You may have heard the phrase “sex sells” and sadly, it really does as it means large revenues for businesses. Through this society are unintentionally contributing to the objectification, sexualisation and exploitation of women in the media as we are allowing these companies to promote such a product through this representation of women and taking advantage of women by only focusing on their physical attractiveness rather than the qualities inside. Beauty should be a source of confidence, not anxiety. Us girls have the power to help the next generation of girls develop a positive relationship with the way they look, helping them to raise their self-esteem and confidence as well as reach their full potential without the pressures of women in the media shown to suggest the standards of beauty. Unattainable beauty. Young females need to learn how to overlook these negative messages the media is sending us in order to be happy within ourselves and not strive to be the media’s portrayal of “perfect”. We should be more grateful of our natural beauty. Having a negative view of our appearance impacts the choices in the friends that we make, the jobs we apply for, it impacts everything. It couldn’t be more critical to your happiness. We as young women spend a significant amount of time analysing and trying to fix the things that aren’t quite right and we should spend…

I did not ever before think that there was something wrong with the way I looked. I turned to look at my arms, and then down at my stomach, my thighs...now everything seemed wrong with me. When walking home all I saw were happy, skinny people. Oh how I wished I could look like them and be as happy and confident as they were. Only, if only someone told me that size is not the most important thing about a person, maybe I would have grown up to think otherwise. I knew that people would avoid me, call me lazy, and tell me that I was worthless and disgusting, but one thing they would never tell me is that I am beautiful, and somehow, they always had their justifications. This is exactly what Coleman faced as a child as she describes in her essay “Discrimination at Large”, where people were mostly cruel in dolling out judgement on fat people. “I would prove that I was not just a slob, a blimp, a pig. I would finally escape the unsolicited remarks of strangers ranging from the "polite"--"You would really be pretty if you lost weight"--to the hostile ("Lose weight, you fat slob").” (Coleman, 4). I have been the recipient of this type of judgement, as after that awful comment, I was…

Every girl has seen a woman in the media stick thin, sun kissed, envy of the way she looks “perfect”. Women that are put on television, a magazine or advertisements is ultimately fake with Photoshop, makeup and plastic surgery. This is a dangerous perception of beauty which has resulted in a decline in self-acceptance. Many girls any age struggle with their image believing that they are not thin enough, their hair is not long enough, or even they believe that they are ugly. I believe that the social stereotype of beauty should go back to the 50’s.…

Beautiful. Everyone wants to look beautiful, but who determines what beautiful is? Being ugly is a problem that everyone fears. Getting under the knife on a surgical table is an answer to the problem. Eating an apple and only an apple, once a day is the other answer to the problem. The problem of not looking beautiful is slowly wiping out the naturally beautiful men and women. What are you to do when looking like you do, is not beautiful? A great amount of people go to this extent because of what influence them the most – parents, boys/girls, lovers, and friends – tell them. Someone who does not have the crease in her eyelids, someone who hates their fat chin, or someone who wants a thin body for Spring Break, goes through this phase of false impression of what beauty really is.…

Physical beauty is not something you can control as easy as your inner beauty. I know that we have plastic surgeons and various diet plans to help our physical beauty but we have to work with the beauty that God gave us. Physical beauty cannot be determined by one individual because one person might think that someone is attractive, physically, but another has a different idea of attractiveness. Therein lies the statement "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." The people that have the same view of…

My interest on this subject was peaked after spending the evening with my five year-old cousin, Sami, last week. We were sitting and eating dinner when she said, "Cali, I am fat and ugly." Well, I almost fell out of my chair. At the age of five, she was already cutting herself down. "Research shows that physical appearance is the strongest correlate of global self-worth in childhood and adolescence (398)."…
