The Tower Bridge in England
The Beautiful Tower Bridge in England

For the bridge of the same name in Sacramento, California, see Tower Bridge (California).
Tower Bridge (built 1886–1894) is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name. It has become an iconic symbol of London.
The bridge consists of two towers tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's present colour scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for the Queen Elizabeth II's silver jubilee. Originally it was painted a mid greenish-blue colour.[1]
The nearest London Underground station is Tower Hill on the Circle and District lines, and the nearest Docklands Light Railway station is Tower Gateway.[2]
Contrary to popular belief, the song "London Bridge is Falling Down" has nothing to do with Tower Bridge, instead referring to the collapses of other various London Bridges.[3]

History[edit]

Elevation, with dimensionsIn the second half of the 19th century, increased commercial development in the East End of London led to a requirement for a new river crossing downstream of London Bridge. A traditional fixed bridge could not be built because it would cut off access by tall-mastedships to the port facilities in the Pool of London, between London Bridge and the Tower of London.
A Special Bridge or Subway Committee was formed in 1876, chaired by Sir Albert Joseph Altman, to find a solution to the river crossing problem. It opened the design of the crossing to public

The Brooklyn Bridge was a feat of modern technology. Its construction spanned from 1869 to 1883, or fifteen years over the lives of its three creators. The first, who was also the designer, was John Augustus Roebling. Many thought it impossible for his plan to succeed, as most other suspension bridges had failed under certain circumstances, but he was determined to prove them wrong. In 1867 his plan was approved by New York legislators and just two years later construction began. Throughout the years of construction, many died, including Roebling himself. After his passing, Roebling’s son, Washington A. Roebling, took his place as chief engineer. For most of the time afterwards, he worked well in this place, but after getting what was called…

History: In Roman and medieval times, ships tended to dock at small quays in the present-day city of London or Southwark, an area known as the Pool of London. However, this gave no protection against the elements, was vulnerable to thieves and suffered from a lack of space at the quayside. The Howland Great Dock in Rotherhithe (built 1696 and later forming the core of the Surrey Commercial Docks) was designed to address these problems, providing a large, secure and sheltered anchorage with room for 120 large vessels. It was a major commercial success and provided for two phases of expansion during the Georgian and Victorian eras. The first of the Georgian docks was the West India (opened 1802), followed by the London (1805), the East India (also 1805), the Surrey (1807), St Katharine (1828) and the West India South (1829). The Victorian…

It cost about 13 million dollars to build. The two bases are equilateral triangles (triangles with three 54 foot-long sides). At the top of the arch, the triangle is only 17 feet long on each side. Visitors enter the arch from an underground visitors center and can travel to the observation deck at the top in a 40-passenger tram that runs inside the arch.…

Before I get into the physics of the bridge you need to know what a truss bridge is and how it works. A truss is a structure composed of members connected together to form a rigid framework. Members are the load-carrying components of a structure. In most trusses, members are arranged in interconnected triangles, as shown below. Because of this configuration, truss members carry load primarily in tension and compression. Because trusses are very strong for their weight, they are often used to span long distances. They have been used extensively in bridges since the early 19th century; however, truss bridges have become somewhat less common in recent years. Today trusses are often used in the roofs of buildings and stadiums, in towers, construction cranes, and many similar structures and machines.…

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most famous and iconic bridges in the United States along with The Golden Gate Bridge. The initial planning of this bridge took place in 1867 when New York State Senate approved a legislation about a New York Bridge Company and the largest suspension bridge project. The construction of the bridge started in 1869 by the designer and chief engineer John Roebling and officially opened for public on May 24, 1883. At that time, Brooklyn Bridge was considered the longest suspension bridge in the world and among the most celebrated architectures of the 19th century (Freeman, 2004).…

The "Truss Bridge" is similar to a beam bridge except much stronger. These bridges use a pattern of geometrical shapes (triangles) called trusses. These trusses are very rigid (they don't move when pushed) and, thus, make the bridge very STONG! Because of their strength, truss bridges are often used for railway bridges as they must be able to support the great mass and the vibrations of the trains.…
