Theme of Macbeth In Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, ambition conspires with unholy forces to carry out evil deeds, which in term generates fear, guilt, and horrible crimes. The major theme of the play concerns Macbeth, the protagonist and tragic hero. From his rise, fall, and destruction, an idea develops regarding ambition. Ambition is the desire for personal achievement. Ambitious people seek to be the best at what they choose to do for attainment, power, or superiority. The motif of ambition in the play is that being ambitious leaves one blind to certain areas and can drive one insane to reach the intended goal. The lust for power, leads to the destruction of self and of others throughout the play. Throughout the course of the play, Macbeth repeatedly misinterprets the guilt that he suffers from as being a simple matter of fear. His way of dealing with his guilt is to face it directly by committing more crimes, and this, of course, generates more chaos. Lady Macbeth is fully aware of the difference between fear and guilt, and she attempts to prevent guilt by first denying her own sense of knowledge and then by focusing her attention on the care of Macbeth’s guilt. The corruption leading to the consequences are made clear through the degenerate acts committed by Macbeth, and his wife Lady Macbeth, which are exasperated by their ambition and pursuit of power. “It is the cry of women, my good lord….The Queen, my lord, is dead” (V.v.9-18). “Here you may see a tyrant” (V.viii.31). Two consequences that happen in Macbeth are that Lady Macbeth commits suicide and Macbeth is slain as a tyrant.
