Loy Krathong's Day, a Letter about Love and Writing
Name…Mr. Setthawut Maneepathompong
BA.English Batch 7/1 ID: 535302414
Loy krathong’s Day Nov 22,2007: THIS evening, as the Thai people go to the nearby rivers, khlongs or ponds to float their lotus-shaped vessels made of banana leaves, they will be evoking the spirit of the sacred past, with a blessing of a full moon. Of all the Thai festivals, Loy Krathong is perhaps one of the most ritualistic and colourful events, rich in religious and spiritual expression. A krathong normally comes with a candle, three-joss-sticks and some flowers. Floating the krathong down the river during the high tide, and after the rainy season is over, not only signifies the attempt to purge evil or bad luck, but also represents an act of worshipping the Goddess of the water. Therein lies the influence of Brahminism. Brahmin rites cannot be separated from the traditional religious practices of the Thais. But ancient Thai beliefs and folklore also hold that there are higher spirits residing everywhere, in the rivers, the trees and the mountains. There are virtually no places on earth that are not, or have not been, occupied by ghosts or by gods. You are supposed to act with reservation and not to speak out loud when you are in a forest because you do not want to disturb the spirits. But in Western thought, a forest is nothing but a wilderness for man to conquer. For Bt3,800 a ticket at the Shangri-la Hotel, you can observe the delights of fireworks above the Chao Phraya River while having your favourite wine and food. Other Bangkok hotels, with an eye for the dollar, also go at top gear with their Loy Krathong gimmicks. This is an idle, if not rather expensive, way to let the Loy Krathong Day slip by without philosophising or without the trouble fighting the crowds on the riverbanks. Nowhere in Thailand is the Loy Krathong Festival held with more fanfare than at Sukhothai, one of the ancient capitals that lies about 450 kilometres north of Bangkok.

The Chinese are inextricable from the history of Thailand’s development, notably due to the fact that they were instrumental in the flourishing of the agricultural industry and even helped Thailand discover as well as exploit one of its prime commodities, sugar. The monarchy also prospered from their labour, taxes and not least from their vices: gambling drinking and smoking opium. Thailand is frequently lauded as a model for harmonious multi-cultural co-existence and respectable levels of national unity between the Chinese and the indigenous, despite the ‘threatening’ presence of the Chinese in the economic and political…

Hmong’s traditional spirituality and social structure are represented in the textile language. One of best known of Hmong needle art is Paj Ntaub meaning story cloth or flower cloth (Craig, 2010). Hmong began to draw traditional stories so that they would be remembered. Each selection of pattern, colors, and fabric for the custom has an important meanings and functions (Craig, 2010). Each design and geometric pattern of clothes represents different cultural beliefs, symbols, meanings and functions (Craig, 2010). They often use black fabric with bright colored threads, and one of common patterns seen is elephant’s foot that stands for family (Craig, 2010). The patterns are described and named by nature things like ram’s head, snail house, mountains, and dragon’s tail (Craig, 2010). Their traditional designs serve as a visual art and ritual functions. According to McCall (1999), the costumes were to identify themselves as Hmong, to express the wealth, and to prepare one’s sprit to after death. The textile customs, Paj Ntaub, are carried from one generation to next for their festivals, ceremonies, and celebrations, such as Hmong New Year in December (Yang,…

Valentine held tried to hold the wheel steadily, despite his shaking hands. They dripped with sweat beneath his sticky leather gloves. He used to never mind the warmth and humidity of the steam as it wafted past his nose, but today it choked him, as if he was trying to breath fresh air but only the dreaded heat of many engines filled his lungs. The sky seemed filled with such a wet haze, perhaps created by the many airships that filled the sky. Valentine has never seen so many ships in one place, except perhaps in old photographs, and he thought so many will never be gathered together again. This was the end, the end of airships, the end of lifting gas, and he was certain he was going to die.…

I have decided to write a letter to you about drinking, which I didn’t think I would have to do. Anyway let’s start. Drinking is very dangerous if you consume a lot. You can have liver damage, brain damage and many other problems that will eventually lead to death. When you drink you could get into a car with a complete stranger and they could start driving under the influence of alcohol, which can result into a car crash which could take your life. Anything could happen when you’re under the influence of alcohol. You then start to become dependent on alcohol as well, making your life seem ‘better’. Another thing about drinking is that you can become really depressed when you drink it, which could lead to suicide. You can become angry when you get drunk which can lead to violence and someone might die from your own stupidity. You can shorten your life by just drinking a drink. Don’t go drinking at a bar in the middle of the night because a stranger could come up and do anything to you and you might not be able to do anything because your reflexes aren’t great and are extremely slow because you’re drunk. Do you want to be stupid and get into a car with someone who’s drunk and driving the car? Do you want to kill someone because they looked at you funny when you were drunk? Do you want to be caught over the influence when you’re driving? No you don’t. That’s why you should never drink unless you want to endanger your health. This is for your own good……

Wow I never expected I would be asked to write a letter to myself, I always thought letters were for other people. Maryann you have been the foundation for your sisters as well as your self. You have had such a tough journey but have managed to pull through with a smile on. When you lost your mom at thirteen I know life seemed like it was ending but it was only the beginning, it has shown us you are a brave, intelligent and caring young woman. I remember the day when mom died like it was yesterday you had no idea what was going to happen; you were more concerned about the girls than yourself. You were forced to move into an abusive home where you were mentally and emotionally abused daily. You had an alcoholic father who didn’t give a rat’s ass, but you would turn around and tell your sisters life will get better. I know you strived to keep life as normal for you girls as possible even when you moved eight times in four years.…

To which degree do I expose my distaste for writing technical or academia worthy essays? I could tell you that I had a horrendous experience which scarred me for life that on occasion demands psychiatric attention but that would be wishful thinking and a false presentation of myself. Maybe I can illustrate how over the many years from kindergarten to the final senior year of high school has my permeable brain been bashed with constant rules, regulations and format guidelines that I must write in to “properly” display my thoughts and ideas. Only to then realize that us as human beings, speak and display body language in a way that contradicts the all mighty Literature format and guidelines. Needless to say I loathe writing at any level of a formatted essay or paper to the point that I would rather attend defensive driving or jury duty multiple times a week for a supplemental grade instead of writing. However though, a new found respect for writing came to me not in my college years writing research papers but as a U.S. Navy recruit sitting in boot camp in Great Lake, Illinois.…

“Valentine” is a controversial love poem written by Carol Ann Duffy. Throughout the poem the poetess compares love to an onion and she does that by using a variety of techniques such as imagery, symbolism, word choice and structure. All these techniques justify why “Valentine” is an unusual love-poem as they help the poet express her different point of view. Overall, the poem is unusual as its title mistakenly leads the reader into thinking that the poem will be typical. I felt deeply moved by the poet’s ability to arise thoughtfulness and reflexion in the reader. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Carol Ann Duffy gives a controversial outlook on love and from the very start, it is made clear that the poem is centred around its main key symbol : an onion. The poet makes some other key suggestions on how love makes one feel. Carol Ann Duffy conveys that love is not simple nor always pleasant. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||\ Throughout the poem, the poetess is comparing love to an onion. Onions provoke tears while love is meant to bring happiness and joy. Therefore, the main symbol makes this love-poem an unusual one: “ It will blind you with tears Like a lover “ Onions have a strong scent that makes us cry when we cut them. The poet refers to crying over somebody loved, like you would over an onion. Being ‘blinded’ suggests not being able to see straight - usually when one is blinded from love, he does not see any faults in their lover and idealises them. Normally ‘tears’ are reaction to extreme happiness or sadness, and in love both are likely to occur at some point. This comparison makes the poem an unusual one, because when dealing with love we want to believe that it is perfect. My opinion is that lovers do not want to think of sadness or problems as often they are scared to face reality and the mortality of their relationship. In love, one can never be fully certain of the lover’s feelings and this…
