In the Shakespeare`s summarized version of play The Taming of the Shrew we travel approximately four hundred years back in time during the growing period of Renaissance and the reign of the Queen of England, Elizabeth I, where Shakespeare shows us the dominance of men in relation to women, with setting in Padua (current Italy) while the movie Ten Things I hate about You, successfully updated version of The Taming of The Shrew adapted to contemporary audiences, shows the same relationship between man and woman though significantly changed throughout the time. Adopting The Taming of The Shrew for modern audiences required changing more than setting and dialogue. The theme of changing to please a husband and live up to social expectations would not be well received in our individualistic, egalitarian culture. Changes in women`s rights and dating rituals have made Shakespeare`s message obsolete and inappropriate for contemporary society. There are many similarities and differences in both the movie and the writing. For instance, most of the similarities have to do with power of relationships, sisterhood, courtship, dating and above all self-identity while the differences are highlighted in different valuations between the society in the Elizabethan’s Era and our modern society. Through the character of Petruchio in The Taming of The Shrew Shakespeare demonstrates the patriarchal values of society and women`s inferiority to men but also the importance of money and the social status. We see that wealth is valued in society which is Petruchio`s main motive to marry a woman, a dotter to Lord of Padua. In almost the same way, through the Petruchio`s newer version of character in the movie Ten Things I hate about you that is Patrick`s character, it is revealed that popularity, status and being wealthy are also priorities in the modern society although with the
