The Taj M ahal stands in the city of Agra in the northern Indian

State of Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of Yamuna River. The Taj
Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife Mumtaz
Mahal, also known as Arjumand
Bano
Begum. The Mughal

Emperor Shah Jahan ruled from 1628 to 1658. He married

Arjumand
Bano Begum in 1612 A.D. He called his wife Mumtaz
Mahal or Crown of the Palace, because she was very precious to him. The Empress Mumtaz used to accompany her husband in his journey and military campaigns. In 1631, on a campaign at
Burhanpur with the Emperor, Mumtaz
Mahal took her last breath giving birth to their 14th child. It is believed that, her dying wish to Shah Jahan was that he should "build a tomb in her memory such as the world had never seen before."

Building of Taj
Mahal began in 1632 and completed around
1653. It took 22 years for the Taj
Mahal to be completed. A huge labor force of 20,000 workers and 1000 elephants to built the Taj
Mahal. The most skilled architecture, in lay craftsmen, calligraphers, stone carars and masons came from all over India and lands as far as Persia and Turkey. It is build totally out of white marble. The structure combines ingredients of Persian,
India, Islamic and Turkish styles of architecture.
The cost of building the Taj
Mahal was 32 million rupees.
