The Sweet Lure of Chocolate

Sweet! Creamy! Delicious! The sweetness of chocolate that runs into your mouth, into your tongue, and goes down into your throat, you can’t stop having more and more chocolates to taste! It’s very tempting that you don’t want to miss even the bit that is left.

But where does it come from? Does it bring healthy benefits to us? Think of it. Let’s see what’s behind the sweet lure of chocolate.

Initially, chocolates are from cacao beans, from a cacao tree. It came upon the Aztec Indians using cacao beans to prepare their royal drink called ‘chocolati’. But then the great Spanish explorer, Hernando Cortez, took some beans back with him to Spain. It even grew more and became popular. Until, investors created machinery to be more efficient, thus less expensive, and produced an even better tasting chocolate.

Chocolates may contribute good and bad effects for our health. Chocolate is good for us because it contains a range of nutrients which include minerals such as potassium, calcium and iron.

But, on the other hand, chocolate may bring bad effects for our health. For example, on an article by Jessica Huff, the refined sugar in chocolate can be detrimental to your teeth when eaten often without regular and proper teeth brushing. Sugar plays a harmful role in tooth decay by providing the bacteria in your mouth with energy and plaque begins to grow on your teeth.

We just need to learn how to control and discipline ourselves. We should have a balanced way of eating chocolates to avoid getting sick!

Well, chocolate is my favourite sweet. I never looked to other type of sweets other than chocolates. Are you familiar with the movie, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?” After watching the movie, I’ve imagined a river of chocolate, trees that look like chocolates and grass that smells like chocolate. It’s true, believe me.

Previously, many studies have been done to find the correlation between chocolates consumption and moods but the relationship between chocolates and moods were highly complex. However, the effectiveness of consuming chocolates on peoples’ mood remains unclear and the evidence in chocolate studies remains highly controversial. A questionnaire was used to collect data about student perceptions in consuming chocolates and its effects on their mood. The questionnaire provided consists of five questions about chocolates. The results of the research show that most students agreed about the effects of chocolates consumption on students’ mood. Majority of the respondents confirmed that they felt more calm and happy after consumed chocolates.     Well chocolate has antioxidants, antioxidants protect the body from aging caused by pre-radicals which can cause and lead to heart damage and also this prevents you from getting heart disease. The reason why dark chocolate tastes so bitter is because not all sugar and butter is added that would go into milk chocolate in fact less is added this is why dark chocolate contains 70% coco which makes it less fattening as it’s more natural. Furthermore coco butter is high in saturated fat, BUT 1/3 of fat is stearic acid, which doesn’t raise bad cholesterol. 1/3 of fat is unsaturated fat called oleic acid which raises good cholesterol. Although chocolate does contain caffeine it only contains a small amount whereas coffee and coke contains a substantial amount of caffeine.
