The Suitors and Disloyal Servants in the Odyssey Get What They Deserve
‘The Suitors and the disloyal servants get what they deserve.’ How far do you agree with this statement?

In the closing passages of the Odyssey, the suitors and disloyal servants are punished for their crimes against Odysseus, and it does indeed seem that the death penalty doled out by Odysseus is harsh. However, at this particular period of Greek history, it was expected that each man take his own vengeance against his trespassers as there was no judicial system in place to deal with these problems at the time, therefore it seems justified that as their crimes stretched over a period of nearly 20 years and were directly against xenia, the law of Zeus, that Odysseus take his revenge as he wishes.

Indeed in the Odyssey, there are examples of people breaking the law of the Gods, for example Tityus in Book 11. He was left with vultures ‘plucking at his liver [...] whilst his hands were powerless to drive them off.’ This was due to the fact that he had assaulted one of Zeus’ partners; therefore it seems fair that Odysseus takes revenge in a similar fitting manner. Indeed, for at least some of the suitors, the punishment seems to fit the crime. Rather fittingly, the first to be killed was the leader of the suitors, Antinous. He was killed in a manner which does seem appropriate, as he reached ‘for his fine cup to take a draught of wine’, he was killed with a spear by Odysseus. As Antinous had broken the rules of xenia and lived a lavish lifestyle from Odysseus’ keep, it seems fair that he be killed. As well as this, the third suitor, Amphinomus, is killed when ‘Telemachus hit[s] him from behind, midway between the shoulders, with a spear.’ As this was a prophecy by Athene, it certainly does seem fitting that this prophecy be fulfilled by Odysseus. Prior to this, the second suitor to be killed was the right hand man of Antinous, Eurymachus.     One characteristic that Odysseus presents is being insensible towards his crew members. An example of this is when Odysseus and his men are trapped in the Cyclopes cave, Odysseus says “Now came the time to toss for it: who ventured along with me?     In the novel, it is clearly shown how Odysseus got his men into many life threatening situations, for example “Humbly those wolves and lions with mighty paws fawned on our men- who met their yellow eyes and feared them.” (lines 547-549). It really is quite fascinating how Odysseus managed to get all of his men killed from multiple occasions. It seems like he could not learn after numerous failures to save the lives of his men. It it almost sickening to know Odysseus talked about these vicious attacks with no remorse for the event. It is almost as if he could use it to tell another story in his basking of glory at the hands of King Alnicus and the Phaeacians.     Telemachus’ house is overrun by suitors trying to marry his mother, Penelope, since Odysseus has been gone for years and is presumed dead by almost everybody. The suitors embody what it means to be an awful guests and “feed on another’s goods and go scot-free” (Homer 1.187). They all make fun of their host and have intruded on their space for years on end trying to marry Odysseus’s wife while consuming all of Telemachus’ food and drink.     Inordinate hunger/ temptation leads to Odysseus’s men losing sight of their goal to reach their native land. The opening lines of the Odyssey refer to Odysseus as “the wanderer, blown off course time and again/ After he plundered Troy’s sacred heights” (3 page 1). This indicates that there is punishment for excessive hunger. It implies that Odysseus and his crew were blown off course after they plundered Troy because this plundering of Troy is a display of superiority and a way to satiate their “hunger” for revenge. As a result, they’re punished by the Gods who delay their journey time and again. Nestor tells Telemachus that before they start their journey back home Menelaus and Agamemnon have a quarrel and they call “an assembly of the entire army in a reckless manner, toward sunset/ And all out of order [they] had all been drinking”(150 page 32). This indicates that their temptation for indulgence and wine cause them to become reckless which in turn results in the Greek army splitting into two sections causing confusion, thereby delaying their journey back home and putting several lives in jeopardy. Zeus plans for them “a bitter journey home” because they “were not all prudent or just”(144 page 32) implying that they didn’t control their urges which made them loose sense of right or wrong.
