The Sublime
Longines book on the sublime has provided me and the world with many insights on good writing and achieving the sublime. He gives five basic rules for writing and goes in depth on how important structure is. Here is my take on it.

He talks of structure in the sublime. We must be clear in what we mean to say and how we do it. He talks extensively of this on page fifty. He also tells us we must not have tumors in the story “for they only dilute”. If you are clear and smart about how you structure it and don't go off subject you are that much closer to the sublime.

He also tells us of the five basic rules for writing. The first is you need a boldness in the thoughts. This means you must know what you're writing and why you are writing it. Second, you must raise passions. For your writing to be taken through history it must play to the audience's passions. Third, skilful application to figures is required. You must be skilful in your imagery, giving the reader’s imagination an outlet from your piece. Fourth, having noble and graceful manner of expression means you must be skillful in your application of words and expressions. And the fifth rule relates to structure and composition. your work must have no tumors and use the appropriate vocabulary for the desired audience.

    Bram Van Velde

Writing is a process of dealing with not-knowing, a forcing of what and how. We have all heard novelists testify to the fact that, beginning a new book, they are utterly baffled as to how to proceed, what should be written and how it might be written, even though they’ve done a dozen. At best there’s a slender intuition, not much greater than an itch. The anxiety attached to this situation is not inconsiderable. “Nothing to paint and nothing to paint with,” as Beckett says of Bram van Velde. The not-knowing is not simple, because it’s hedged about with prohibitions, roads that may not be taken. The more serious the artist, the more problems he takes into account and the more considerations limit his possible…

Writing varies from a text message to a novel. Writers often have a difficult task in creating a piece of work that truly identifies the meaning of good writing. Every good writer usually starts with the basics such as genre, audience, rhetorical situation, and reflection of the piece. Throughout this semester, we have gone through all of these key terms in great detail with each new assignment that has come our way. In doing this, not only as students but also as writers, we have come to create our own theory of writing. Every writer has a different theory of writing though most are very similar. Now, at this point in the semester after doing countless journals, in-class exercises, and final assignments, I think I have figured out my own theory of writing.…

"Don’t confuse simplicity, though, with simplemindedness. A good writer can express an extremely complicated idea clearly and make the job look effortless. But such simplicity is a difficult thing to achieve because to be clear in your writing you have to be clear in your thinking. This is why the simplest and clearest writing has the greatest power to delight, surprise, inform, and move the reader. You can’t have this kind of shared understanding if writer and reader are in an adversary relationship." (pp. 195–196)…
