The Story of Ben Carson
The Decisions of Ben Carson Throughout his life Ben Carson faced many trials and tribulations. All of which forced him to make life altering decisions. Going from a "disturbed" child and adolescent to an outstanding surgeon society would think Dr. Carson made the right choices, but along the way Ben wasn't so sure. One of the important decisions Ben was faced with was in the tenth grade. He had to decide weather or not he wanted to continue on his downward spiral with school and friends or if he wanted to get his act together and become high in rank in his school's ROTC program. After seeing his brother in his ROTC uniform Ben was certain he wanted to follow in Curtis' footsteps. He knew he would have to work tremendously hard if he ever wanted to be named colonel as a student. Carson decided to put his best foot forward and forgot about being in the "it" crowd with the "right" clothes and focused on his ROTC goal. Ben was honored when Sgt. Bandy put him in charge of the most rambunctious class. His strategy for whipping the class into shape was getting to know them individually and then "structured the exercises accordingly (65)." Sgt Bandy was pleased to see that Ben turned the worst class into the best class of the unit in a matter of weeks. Ben was then promoted to second lieutenant. By the time he graduated Ben not only reached his goal and was ranked colonel, but he had been offered a full scholarship to West Point. A whole new decision in its own, Ben turned the scholarship down to pursue his dreams of being a doctor. Another decision Ben made came after his first year of college at Yale. He was put in charge of a highway crew that picked up trash along highways in Detroit. The crews were made up of mostly inter-city kids. Instead of allowing his crew to collect only 12 bags of trash a day like the other supervisors, Ben made sure his crew turned in at least 150 bags at the end of each day. He taught the young men in his group the idea of hard work and

If the surgery was successful, Carson would be famous, if not, it could ruin the doctor’s career. Long knew the stakes, but had made up his mind earlier that it would be…

Ben was struggling emotionally and socially to make sense of his life. When Aunt Frieda comes for a visit, Ben is less than thrilled, but when she shares stories of her past in Russia they develop a bond that will change Ben’s future. This taught Ben that non-violence isn’t cowardly and that there are other ways to deal with his battles with Claude. But when Claude and his two followers beat Ben unconscious, the only thing that came to mind was getting revenge. He took up boxing and was almost ready to give Claude a taste of his own medicine. In chapter seven Ben Carson mentions during his second half of his sophomore year he joined ROTC mainly because of his brother Curtis. Ben Carson saw his brothers uniform, the badges, ribbons, but most importantly Curtis Carson was a person Ben Carson wanted to emulate and look up to. Shortly after joining Ben meets a student named Sharper which encouraged him to progress through the ranks of there ROTC program. Sharper was known for reaching the rank for a student known as full colonel, a feat that was hard to accomplish which fueled Ben’s desire to excel even further. A leader in the field of medicine that truly inspired me to gravitate towards a career in medicine is retired neurosurgeon Benjamin Carson. Benjamin Carson an african-american neurosurgeon and was the first neurosurgeon to separate conjoined twins. HOwever, I’m not inspired by Carson’s achievement, I am greatly inspired by his story on how he was able to achieve success. Dr. Carson was raised by a single mother, in a very tough society. He always struggled with school, and especially his anger. His mother urged him to work hard, and go to the library to read books. Although after a lot of continuous nagging, Carson eventually listened to his mother and began to read books at the library. HE began to see the beauty of knowledge, and education. He began to see the beauty of life itself.…

Benjamin, as the title of the film implies, is nothing short of extraordinary but under the stress of time he eventually becomes commonplace. As time passes he begins to realize his fate, accepts it, and in turn ends up ordinary; his sole grace being the memories he leaves behind. Starting out inquisitive, adventurous and bold, Benjamin acted on impulse; doing whatever he felt like. On one such occasion, Benjamin journeys through Manhattan for the first time in his life, he may not have done much but he refused to follow the rules set upon him, not regretting what he did even after Queenie shows her discontempt. His life continues this way, without any significant alterations in his perspective, until he has a child. This child acts as a messenger,…

50 cent once said, “Some people are born with very little; some are fortunate enough to have it all. When I grew up, we didn't have much. I had to hustle to get what I wanted... but I had that hunger for more. I didn't always make the right choices, but I learned from my mistakes (“Brainy Quotes”). This quotation shows how tough life can be, but how your life choices can change it. 50 Cent and Ben Carson both have very tough lives growing up, but have become extraordinary men.
