The Soggy Soil Case Study
The Soggy Nail Aaron, a crime scene investigator, was fairly used to grisly scenes of murder and death. He enjoyed his line of work and how he was able to travel the country due to his specialization in murder, and how the clues often led to a clear, concise solution and resolution; this time, however, that was not the case. The victim was a young girl, found tossed in a ditch north of a rural Montana mountain town after a fierce winter storm Tuesday evening. She appeared to be around eight years old, with a frail frame and a battered body; her clothes were torn, and her face bruised. Surveying the crime scene, Aaron shook his head and marveled at how the farm truck, which had been traveling into town for supplies, had spotted her slim figure

A young Alice Sebold, just 18 years old, was finishing her freshman year at Syracuse University when her life became utterly transformed. She was walking through a park near campus late one night when she was threatened with a knife, brutally beaten, verbally insulted, dragged amongst dead leaves and broken beer bottles, and viciously raped. Alice fought back to the best of her ability until she locked eyes with her rapist and realized that he now held her life in his hands. The thought of death throbbed through her head and she began to believe that this would be her last night. Ironically, once Alice’s rapist was finished, helped her put her clothes back on and repeatedly pleaded how sorry he was. Alice, whose mind and body was now numb, went along with whatever act he was putting on because she was only focused on saving her life. Then he leaves Alice as if what he just had done was nothing out of the ordinary. When Alice tells her story to the police, she was informed about another case of a young lady who was murdered and dismembered at the exact location of her rape. Alice, a rape victim, was said to be lucky. Hoping to hear assuring words or a guarantee that her rapist will soon be caught; Alice is compared to a dead girl. In no way, shape, or form was Alice feeling any type of luck after what she had gone through.…

The body lay in the vineyard, fully dressed in a sharp tailored suit, loose tie and polished shoes. Its hands, stiff with rigor, showed fingers digging deep into the earth. Investigator Louis Deville from the Violent Crimes Investigative Team took a moment to view the scene. Not the murder scene but the surrounding view from where he stood. The brisk November morning brought a blanket of mist across Seneca Lake. Crime presents itself everywhere, he thought. Even in the most serene of places.…

The Police Department of Alamance County had never seen a victim so composed, so determined and so sure. Just a few hours after her horrifying ordeal, after the emotionless doctor swabbed her vagina for semen samples at the hospital, Jennifer sat down at the police station with Detective Mike Gauldin. "The first comment I remember her making was that, “I'm going to get this guy that did this to me.” She said, “I took the time to look at him. I will be able to identify him if I'm given an opportunity," Gauldin remembered her saying (Hansen, 2001). She began combing through photos, trying to help come up with a composite of her rapist.…

The objective of this plant growth experiment would be to distinguish if potting soil could be manipulated in any certain way, to maximize or increase its overall efficiency. Our goal would be to determine what optimum combination of ingredients would best increase efficiency in soil productivity to equal the result of hydroponics (Cultivation of plants in nutrient solution rather than in soil). Through research our group came to the conclusion that agar, pearlite and mulched grass could all greatly contribute to enriching the nutrient of the soil. We predict that one of the treatments, using the above listed ingredients, will have a greater growth rate than the controlled plant strictly using hydroponics.…

Select a 20-g portion of soil from the material prepared for the liquid limit test, either after the second mixing before the test, or from the soil remaining after completion of the test. Reduce the water content of the soil to a consistency at which it can be rolled without sticking to the hands by spreading and mixing continuously on the glass plate or in the mixing/storage dish. The drying process may be accelerated by exposing the soil to the air current from an electric fan, or by blotting with paper that does not add any fiber to the soil. Paper such as hard surface paper toweling or high wet strength filter paper is adequate.…

    Soil Compaction

Soil compaction is one of the most critical components in the construction of roads, airfields, embankments, and foundations. The durability and stability of a structure are related to the achievement of proper soil compaction. Structural failure of roads and airfields and the damage caused by foundation settlement can often be traced back to the failure to achieve proper soil compaction. Compaction is the process of mechanically densifying a soil. Densification is accomplished by pressing the soil particles together into a close state of contact with air being expelled from the soil mass in the process. Compaction, as used here, implies dynamic compaction or densification by the application of moving loads to the soil mass. This is in contrast to the consolidation process for fine-grained soil in which the soil is gradually made more dense as a result of the application of a static load. With relation to compaction, the density of a soil is normally expressed in terms of dry density or dry unit weight. The common unit of measurement is pcf. Occasionally, the wet density or wet unit weight is used.…

    Soils Lab

The stability and life of any structure – a building, an airport, a road, dams, levees – depend on the stability, strength, and deformation of soils.[1] Unfortunately, due to the uncertainties of the world’s natural materials, the study of geotechnical engineering, and soil mechanics in particular, is both challenging and necessary. The following report is a compilation of the results acquired as a result of two laboratories performed by Group 13 at McMaster University on February 1st and 15th, 2007. Four tests; Direct Shear, Vacuum Triaxial Compression, Unconsolidated and Undrained Triaxial and Unconfined Compression were carried out in order to assess the performance of our most ancient and complex engineering materials, sand and clay. The behavior and response of these materials was a result of various applied loads, shearing forces, confinements and drainage conditions. Throughout this report we will describe and define the various analyses used, our expected versus actual results, some of the sources of the inherent inaccuracies and errors, as well as the final shear strength of the soils samples provided.…

A material of geological and biological origin that is changed by chemical, biological, and physical processes, giving it the ability to support plant growth is defined as soil. Soils come in an almost infinite variety of vertical structures and textures. Most soils are hundreds of years old and change very slowly. The work ability of the soil is the ease in which a soil can be cultivated and is determined by the soil texture. There are distinct layers of soil that are not always visible to eye but are made up of different horizons. O horizon/Humus is the decomposing plant matter. A Horizon/Topsoil is the mixed humus and leached mineral soil.…
