The Simple Gift Chapter 6
Chapter 6 Summary – Friends

Chapter 6 is all based the strengthening of friendship between the characters of Caitlin and Bill and of Old bill and Billy. In the section Comfort Bill talks about how he hated school and didn’t have any friends. The repetition of the negative quotes in the section emphasises how Billy did not belong in his old environment. “I never talked to girls, I hardly talked to anyone. Sure, I answered questions from teachers and occasionally I’d talk to some guys I’d know for years. But I didn’t have any friends”. This links back to the harsh and abusive environment Billy grew up in, as stated in previous chapters.
The chapter also highlights how Caitlin, similar to Billy, hates private school, and hates the routine that follows when she gets home to her parents. She also recognises that she has more that she really needs in her life and she just wants to spend time with Billy. This is shown in the quote “this big ugly five bedroom million dollar brick box that we live in.” This juxtaposes the feelings that Billy has, as he feels that he is very happy with the new simple life he now lives and this is expressed when he says “living in this carriage is special, its mine”; which links back to how Billy know feels that he belongs in this new environment.
As mentioned before this chapter also highlights the relationship that is building between Old Bill and Billy. In the quote Old bill say “I like the kid”, shows how Old Bill is creating a strong relationship with Billy. In the section Hobos like us you get the strong feeling that Old Bill hates being woken early and interfered with, as mentioned as well in previous chapters. However Billy keeps interfering and looks after Old Bill by giving him “a bowl of weet-bix and a cup of coffee from McDonald’s kept hot in a thermos overnight”. This sense of mateship shows that Billy and Old Bill are starting to feel that they belong.

Gregory is not certain if his car has perhaps touched the number plates on the other car, and while he is thinking of this, the other driver and his co passenger get out of the car and walk over to Gregory. So it goes. Barbara had this special talent to repel people away. Her biggest worry however had always been her gone-absolutely-bonkers-father. She had taken Billy to an elderly house shortly after he’d decided to write letters about Tralfamadore to the local newspaper. Billy had always lived a life full of indignity and so, perhaps, had no great fear of death.…

The symbolism and scatological imagery establishes a decaying, decrepit and depressing environment, which reveals Billy’s isolation. Another evocative portrait is the internal monologue in the poem "Sport" in chapter one. The 'pain and suffering’ of 'soulless tyranny' endured by Billy, from 'the old bastard' his father.…

During the book Caitlin always talks about how Billy has it better because he lacks the physical possessions that make you set in life. This is probably true, but for Billy getting to this stage forced him to rid pretty much all his physical possessions. “As dad stood over me, and said, no more sport, no more forever.” The relevance of this quote in this paragraph could be questioned, but it signifies two physical possessions of Billy before he left home, sport, and his father. These two possessions are the main reason why Billy left and played a strong role in his decision. His father took away his love of sport, among many other things, and when Billy realized that it was getting too much for him, he left behind the few remaining things he still cared for; Bunkbrain his dog was hardest for him to leave. Billy then arrived in Bendarat with nothing; he wanted a fresh start, with nothing.…

Billys venture leads him to a small town called Bendarat, he sees it as a place a good distance away from his father as he gets of the freight train “miles from home, miles from school” Steven Herrick uses repetition to contrast his mood and feelings. His sense of belonging here is that he comes across as a “hobo.” Billy’s desperation for a place to stay, he comes across a carriage that he sees to be just fine “surprisingly warm, and quiet, so quiet.”…

One of Billy's most admirable personality traits is his courage – a willingness to go against powerful social conventions – to follow his dreams. He is unsettled, almost erratic, and persistent in his search to find the one thing that would fill the hole in his heart left by the death of his mother. The last connection he has with his mother is through a letter she had written for him to open when he is eighteen which drives him towards something, and allows him to draw on a reserve of inner strength. Towards the end of the story the strength the letter represents is replaced with the ballet. The character Billy is dynamic in that he blossoms into a headstrong teenager…
