The Vietnam War lasted about two decades. The United States was engulfed in a civil war between North and South Vietnam and wanted to assist the south with preventing a hostile takeover by North Vietnam under the Communism banner. The Vietnam War was not only America’s longest War, but also costliest and deadliest. We spent over $150 billion and suffered close to $58 thousand American deaths and nearly 300 thousand wounded. By the time we decided to withdraw from the war, North Vietnam easily swept through the south and unified Vietnam under Communism. Still to this day, one of the most debated topics regarding the Vietnam War is why the United States got involved and why, when and how we should wage future wars. (Dunn, 2001)…
The Vietnam War was started by President Eisenhower. He was the first to involve the United States in the conflict between North and South Vietnam, by putting in CIA operatives and military advisors in South Vietnam (ushistory). The US's involvement grew with every passing president. President Kennedy was the first to put soldiers in Vietnam. Johnson orders the first official combat of the United States soldiers. Finally, the war ended after eighteen years after it was declared by President Richard Nixon.…
The war in Vietnam was a conflict that started in the 1950s and ended in the early 1970s. During this time period, the United States became increasingly involved in Vietnamese political, economic and military affairs. There were a combination of reasons as to why the United States became more involved, the most important of which in my opinion were the Domino Theory and the growing influence of the National Liberation Front (NFL).…
Tension between North Vietnam and South Vietnam began to rise as leader of North Vietnam Ho Chi Minh set his agenda to reunite Vietnam under communist control. In 1955, a civil war in South Vietnam erupts. Highly trained guerrilla troops under Ho Chi Minh known as the Viet Cong were gunning down South Vietnam’s military, in an attempt to cripple South Vietnam’s army and force unification. In response, President Lyndon Johnson sends military advisors to train South Vietnamese military . As the fighting between the Viet Cong and the South Vietnamese continued for several years, U.S involvement in Vietnam was only to train the South Vietnamese military so they could fight the war themselves. On August 2, 1964 the North Vietnamese fired directly upon two U.S. ships in international waters claiming it was mistaken of identity at Gulf of Tonkin. Congress responded with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. This resolution granted greater authorization of U.S. involvement in Vietnam, and in March 1965, President Lyndon Johnson used that authority to order the first U.S. ground troops to Vietnam. The United States officially…
In March of 1965, President Johnson sent close to a million troops to mediate the civil war happening in Vietnam. This was known as Operation Rolling Thunder. The United States sided with South Vietnam in fighting against the communist backed North Vietnam. The Vietnam War consisted of several battles within Vietnam and the surrounding area of Laos and Cambodia. The battles further included air raids over North Vietnam.…
Resulting from the American fear of spreading communism in South East Asia, the Vietnam War was America's longest and most exhausting conflict. President Lyndon B. Johnson inherited this problem of spreading communism in 1964, and was at first somewhat against the prospect of conflict having known it may hurt his reelection chances. However, as conditions worsened in South Vietnam Johnson began to slowly launch the massive war effort beginning with an unrelenting bombing campaign on the Viet Cong.…
Reed Broussard Coach Roch Civics 3rd hour 1 March, 2016 U.S. vs. Nixon Many presidents have committed scandals while in office. One of the most public of these scandals was the Watergate Scandal. Because of this scandal, President Richard Nixon was brought to the Supreme Court. What resulted in him being brought to the supreme court was a landmark case.…
The large announcement Nixon gave of the U.S invading Cambodian borders caused a huge uproar and a turning point for the antiwar sentiment towards the Vietnam War. Still, Nixon wasn’t the most sympathetic person by calling the protesters “bums”, but said that the conservative Americans were heroes. Nixon also argued that, like the protestors, he wanted to stop the war, put an end to the draft, top the killings, but he also believed that "his decisions would serve that purpose".…
The Vietnam War was the U.S’ longest and most exhausting war- the only war the U.S had ever lost, had far-reaching consequences and impact on most American life from the economy, culture to domestic politics and foreign policy- some of which continue to do so today. The American military had entered Vietnam as a world superpower from World War 2 but left Vietnam with a humiliating defeat, shockingly high casualties, the American public sharply divided and its leaders uncertain of who to trust with its foreign policy. The Vietnam War was from 1955 to 1975 and fell under 5 different presidents filled with scandals and conspiracy theories. After World War 2, North Vietnam declared itself as an independent nation with Communist Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh gaining control over the nation. The Geneva Accords called for a…
Five years after the Kent State shootings, North Vietnamese forces took control of South Vietnam, effectively ending the Vietnam War. Although the longest war in U.S. history was finally over, the outcome was bittersweet for many Americans. An estimated 58,000 U.S. soldiers had lost their lives in the conflict. Another 300,000 had been wounded. In the decades that followed, many soldiers and civilians would work to overcome painful memories and bridge the deep national divide caused by the Vietnam War.…
It’s hard to discuss the Vietnam War without mentioning President Richard Nixon. Like everything else related to Nixon, his role as a leader during the Vietnam War is the subject of debate, speculation, and much interest. For one, President Nixon won the 1968 election thanks to his secret plan to end the war through a strategy known as “Vietnamization” in order to bring “bring peace with honor”. However, Nixon's leadership during this period cannot be discussed without mention of his domestic and foreign policy successes outside of the Vietnam conflict. Through these accomplishments Nixon demonstrated the traits of a capable leader like courage, determination, communication and consistency . Despite his public accomplishments, Nixon showed…
Marking one of the most traumatic periods of U.S. history, the Vietnam War spanned more than a decade and caused massive disruption both in Southeast Asia and on the American home front. Although U.S. leaders were often ambiguous about American involvement in Vietnam, they nevertheless pursued a fairly unbroken policy of interference in the country in an effort to halt the spread of communism during the cold war. In the end, the U.S. defeat in Vietnam proved costly, both financially and in terms of the number of lives lost, and diminished America's reputation as the defender of democracy and freedom throughout the world.…
The Vietnam War was the longest war ever fought by the United States. It lasted more than 15 years, from 1959 to 1975. It was also the first war that the United States lost. There are many debates as to why the US became involved in the war with Vietnam.…
The Vietnam War was a very long war fought by the United States. Actually, the time span was the longest of wars fought. The Vietnam War, itself, spanned for about 15 years with in the time frame from 1955-1975, however, there was conflict leading up to the war for many years before hand. This war was between North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam had allies or support from China, the Soviet Union, and a few other communist allies, whereas South Vietnam was supported or had the allies of the United States, Australia, South Korea, and other anti-communist allies.…
