The Shrunken Head
This book honestly just wins. The Shrunken Head is honestly one of the best middle grade novels I’ve read and the pity is that I barely even knew what it was about before diving in. I just saw the pretty cover and that it was by an author whose name I was familiar with so I decided to give it a shot. This book was 1000% worth it.
The Shrunken head is EVERYTHING. This book combines the supernatural, with a historical setting, throws in a little bit of mystery AND also goes on to explore the awkwardness of being a preteen who is starting to go through puberty. HOW AWESOME IS THAT?
This book is a very quick read (even at 360 pages) and you will be flipping pages, BELIEVE ME. You will want to see these kids get down to the bottom of the mystery.

One of the most interesting parts about the novel is the way in which it is organized. The book has 42 chapters, each consisting of about 8 to 10 pages, and each telling a different story. While that alone, obviously, does not make the novel unique, the fact that the…

Although at times it was hard to follow what was exactly happening in the book. I felt like the book jumped around a lot because each chapter was a different event that happened throughout the year. I didn’t know when the events occurred so at times it was confusing. In addition, the book was older so it was hard to make connections with the book and my everyday life.…

Just in general, I suppose that I do find the first book of the novel quite interesting. I enjoy the footnotes that go along with the story, as they add a great amount of depth and character to the story as a whole. Along with that, the footnotes also provide a good insight to the culture, traditions, mythology and history behind the story line.…

You can’t get away from mysteries in this novel. Every time one is solved, it springs up another. For example, when the mystery of Sam’s identities is solved, it brings up another: why have three identities (Turtle Wexler discovers the answer behind this secret)? When Turtle discovers the true identity of the firebomber, why does she cover for her? When all of the clues are pieced together, why did they point to what seems to be an innocent soup kitchen worker? The novel truly incorporates mystery into every aspect of its story and they aren’t truly solved until the final page. If anybody can figure them out before finishing the book, then they must be a genius.…

    The Monkeyface Chronicles

For my verbal-visual collage, I chose to read the book The Monkeyface Chronicles by Richard Scarsbrook. Richard is a Canadian author who attended Western University where he earned an Honours BA in history. He also attended U of Ottawa and received his Bachelor of Education. Richard published his book the Monkeyface Chronicles in 2010. I chose to read this book for my project because it was recommended by the library staff at NT. Also, the novel won the Ontario Library Association’s White Pine Award in 2011. The White Pine Award is an annual literature award that has awarded young adult novels since 2002. Other books like Little Brother by Cory Doctorow and Mostly Happy by Pam Bustin have also received White Pine Awards.…

The book Stiff by Mary Roach is in a genre of its own in terms of book I have read and I loved every word of it and it has found a spot in my favorite book list. For a book like this, it takes time to analyze and process this book for its intended purpose and I believe reading it over a course of several months helped. Despite my hesitance when first approaching the book, that hesitance quickly turned into admiration for the book and all the eye-opening information it provided. Every single page provided something new and whether that something new was disgusting, moving, or life-changing I looked forward to every page and I can’t say that for most books.…

When going into this novel, I assumed that it would be a little outdated. It is honestly one of the more modern books that I have read in the past few years, which was surprising. The author gets right into it, telling you about how a plane with school boys was shot down. It had me hooked immediately. His use of actual childlike grammar tripped me up a bit, because sometimes it was hard for you to understand, much like if you were actually listen to a nine year old talk. What got me was how the author had created a boy who was overweight and had thick glasses. He may just be a character, but I honestly felt for him. That’s what I like about the author, he actually makes me have emotions towards the characters. He made me feel pitty for Piggy. He made me dislike Ralph at first for making fun of Piggy.…

Since I really enjoyed this novel, I would absolutely recommend it to other people to read. It is an easy read that is enjoyable from a high school age to any age above that. Although this book is written on an 8th grade reading level, it gets very confusing at some point so I wouldn’t recommend anyone younger than 9th grade to read it. There are pictures that start off every chapter but these pictures are used to depict what the man who counted is describing when he tells his stories. Without these pictures to look at, sometimes I would be lost because he speaks of…
