The Shining Mountain
Analysis: The Shining Mountain

Summary:
Pangma-la’s father has named her after a mountain, that’s also called The Shining Mountain. She’s teased about her name in school, and her schoolmates are more interested in her father, who’s a famous mountaineer. He has big expectation to Pangma-la, and she feels like she’s failing. She decides that she will make him proud, and begins to practice in climbing mountains. Pangma-la and her father, goes to The Shining Mountain with the goal to reach the top. At the bottom at the mountain the meet some sherpa men, who wants to carry their bags, but they say no, and then the sherpas tells them, that now a wind will come and blow on them.
They begin to climb the mountain, but Pangma-la has problems, so an old sherpa woman comes and offer her help. She comes four days in succession, and every time she takes something from her, and gives her swan downs instead. The last time she’s taking Pangma-la’s heart, and at the same time, her soul, and then the father, after a talk with the old sherpa woman, who is now the mountain goddess, realizes everything his daughter has done to make him proud, and then, first there, is the first time he shows human feelings.

Settings:
The majority of the story takes place in Scotland, but they also travel to an Asian country. The story takes place sometime after 1927, where BBC, was launched, because the father is always in BBC news. I think the story can take place in both a real world, and also an imaginary world, because some of the things that happens, for example page 21 line 5, where she give away her heart, is unrealistic, but I still think that some people would believe in this so much that they thought it really happened. The social environment is in the home not really god for Pangma-la. I see that on page 19 line 1 where she oppresses her feelings. In the school Pangma-la is teased about her name and the schoolmates is more impressed of what her father is doing, than what Pangma-la

The Shining is a 1980’s horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick. The horror film is based on Stephen King’s novel The Shining. The Shining is a classic horror film that uses death and insanity to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The Shining is as psychological as horror gets. This film didn’t show us cheap tricks, loud noises, or dramatic bloody scene like the average horror film. This film gets under your skin, it shows us something frightening that we don’t fully comprehend. One of the scariest things for people to face in the unknown. The Shining also could be seen as a Drama. The genre, Drama, focuses on the characters and the realistic emotional struggles they face. We see resentment, frustration, annoyance, insanity, etc.…

In his novel, Go tell it on The Mountain, James Baldwin uses his unique style of writing to show how the impact of a sensitive topic (religion) affects a young woman who was brought up in Christ, allowing her to have a close-knit relationship with Jesus. Elizabeth strays away from God for a man who she considered to be her first love. Because of this, the harsh words Richard speaks against Jesus alters her spiritual mentality. When speaking of the love she has for Jesus, Richard states, “You can tell that puking bastard to kiss my big black ass” (Baldwin 192). One can only imagine how it feels to have someone you love speak such hateful words against the one you love, especially the almighty and powerful Jesus Christ. This act destroys her…

    N. Scott Momaday, in the memoir “The Way to Rainy Mountain”, traced the ancestral roots of his tribe back to the start of the Kiowa tribe. Momaday had always known about his ancestry but the death of his grandmother, Aho, prompted him to seek an in-depth personal exploration of his family history and background. Therefore, Momaday went back to his grandmother's residence and he observed that the spirit of the Kiowa tribe was faint but still very stirring. When he travelled to Aho’s house after her death, he’s looking to build a connection with his ancestors. Momaday felt that he could learn a lot of things and gain some insight from his visit to the motherland. From this article, it is evident that the Kiowa people were very spiritual and had an unbending love for nature because they strived to preserve the environment and performed spiritual dances and rituals in veneration to the sun. This memoir is an embodiment of the Kiowa culture, and N. Scott Momaday gives the reader a succession of oral narratives from the Kiowa community.…

    The Haunting of Hill House

I choose to interpret the representation of cars in The Haunting of Hill House. In this novel, a car is first represented as a means of control over Eleanor by her sister (Jackson 7). However, Eleanor’s stealing of the car transforms the car into a representation of freedom from her present life (Jackson 10). The car allows Eleanor to be free of her controlled life and to begin her own journey (Jackson 10). We observe the same car at the conclusion of the novel as a device used to free herself from her forced departure of Hill House (Jackson 178). She uses the car to commit suicide, allowing her to stay at Hill House indefinitely (Jackson 182). I argue that in the novel the car is utilized for control over Eleanor but ultimately for her personal freedom. The car is what liberates Eleanor from her life prior to Hill House and also from her forced departure. I will also argue that the significance of Eleanor’s car being used for freedom is that it shows the transformation of Eleanor’s mental state. The difference in Eleanor’s idea of freedom, travel versus suicide, makes the demise of Eleanor’s mental state evident.…

In the book The Crucible, there were many displays of courage, weakness, and truth. Many characters showed these signs, but only a few stood out to me. I believe John Proctor showed the most courage. As of weakness, I think that I would have to say that both John and Elizabeth Proctor showed a lot of this. Finally for truth, I would give it to Danforth.…

Gazing at the stars outside the sun roof of my husband’s silver sports car seemed to be the only way to control the excitement building inside me. My imagination ran wildly thru visions of scenic mountains draped in clouds of fog. The grey rocky cliffs surrounded by colorful spring flowers almost parallel the beauty of the cool crystal water flowing over a fall like the most rapid of rain spraying a chilly mist on all who behold. With my head full of fantasy and soul full of adventure, the possibility of this dream come true becoming a life changing nightmare seemed all but impossible.…

As the story begins I see the description of why the place was considered the Rainy Mountains. First he explains why it was considered an old land mark to his family. Then he began to go into details and what it looks like and what the weather is like. A good description was when Momaday said, “Winter brings blizzards, hot tornadic winds arise in the spring, and in summer the prairie is an anvil’s edge. The grass turns brittle and brown, and it cracks beneath your feet.” This was a good description because it showed me that the grass is dried out and it is brittle. Also the description he gave of his grandmother when she was praying was very descriptive. Momaday stated that, “Her long, black hair, always drawn and braided in the day, lay upon her shoulders and against her breast like a shawl.” I do not know why she prays like that but when I read this I kind of just put two and two together and said that what they do in there tribe.…
