Shawshank Redemption The Shawshank Redemption is a drama film released in 1994 written and directed by Frank Darabont. The overall theme of The Shawshank Redemption is the burden of isolation and imprisonment. Each of the inmates inside Shawshank Prison is locked up metaphorically as well as literally. Most prisoners in Shawshank redemption are there for life sentences. All that time behind the walls have changed the way the prisoners think and how they live. The young prisoners always say they are innocent when they are truly guilty. But Red, (played by Morgan Freeman) admits that he is guilty after spending 40 years in jail. The time he had to think about what he did is what led him to confess the truth. This is just one example of what all those years of isolation does to a person. The formal elements, camera, and the narrative is what I will use to prove the theme. The overall look and feel of the film is dark until the ending. The mise-en-scene of shawshank prison is unjust and shady. The design and characters help shape the mise-en-scene as an unjust and shady prison system. The design of shawshank looks like an old school dark sort of tower as you can see when andy first arrives to the prison. The costume is spot on in this movie. The officers uniforms look very intimidating as the prisoners uniforms look very dirty and plain. The warden is also dressed nice throughout the movie always in a suit. They use this to differentiate the high class and the lower class. The higher class is always controlling the lower class and accessing their dominance. They instill fear in their prisoners by abusing them and beating them which is very unfair. Years of being in that sort of environment can cause some prisoners to go crazy. Imagine going through that and witnessing that type of abuse every day of your life? Its going to have a huge effect on your brain mentally. This type of abuse makes a

    1. A degradation ceremony is a ceremony in which people are stripped of their personal identities and thrown into a brand new situation; something that they have not experienced before. An example of this from the movie was when the men first arrived at Shawshank Prison at the beginning of the movie. As they were walking in, they were surrounded by the “experienced” convicts and teased. They were then stripped naked, covered in powder to make sure they did not have lice, and then forced to walk throughout the prison with everyone staring at them. No one should have to go through this, the act was humiliating enough. This degradation ceremony was like a welcoming to the new convicted felons, and a little hint of what their new life was going to entail living in Shawshank Prison.…

Director Frank Darabont wrote and directed the film “The Shawshank Redemption” which was based on a novella by Stephen King. “The Shawshank Redemption” touches our hearts and creates warmth in our feelings as it makes us a member of the family as Frank Darabont tells the slow and gentle tale of loving friendship and hope. A Shawshank newcomer (White guy who worked in a bank) in 1946 Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), bangs up a 20-year friendship with a black guy named Red (Morgan Freeman) while in prison. It uses the sweet, soothing and soft voice overs of Red to include us in the story of men forming a community in prison. It isn’t one of those films where it offers us quick, in cloud nine feelings. It accomplishes in avoiding the familiar.…

I choose to watch The Shawshank Redemption; the dominant perspective in the correctional institution that took place in this movie was a get-tough perspective. The way Darabont has continuously used lighting to enhance the negativity of each scene, remains constant. The use of low key lighting is connected throughout the entire movie. At the very beginning when we are first introduced to The Warden, he comes out of the dark and steps into the light which is hardly there. Using low key lighting in the introduction of the antagonist creates a visual cue to internal conflict between the prisoners and The Warden. One of the most significant techniques is the use of silhouette. When the three ‘sisters’ first attack Andy, the characters are shot in a silhouette. This indicates could be inhumane, shameful, as the camera is followed back into the darkness. The use of silhouette is used more than once, on the first night when the prisoners to ‘fishing’ and in result the guards brutally beat a crying prisoner. As he gets dragged from his cell, the guards remain in a silhouette; another inhumane act taken back to the darkness. By using these variations of lighting techniques Darabont ensures viewers can easily understand how they characters are feeling.…

As of today, over thirty, well known critics would consider Shawshank Redemption to be the greatest movie of all time. Although the film has been given this title, director and writer Frank Darabont knows the true genius behind this story is writer, Stephen King. Stephen King is mostly known for his horror, suspense books, but this time he wrote a book about Andy Dufresne, a banker from Maine who is wrongly charged with murdering his cheating wife and her lover. King writes “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” in the first person narrative, in the form of a monologue written by the character, Red. Throughout the whole story Red is presenting us with his recollection of imprisonment and the story of Andy Dufresne. One thing noting about how King placed Red as our narrator is that many of the things Red speaks about comes from rumors he claims he heard around the prison. This goes to show us that King intentionally placed an unreliable narrator to hold our hands through the story.…

Prison has always been a place of intrigue for people who have not spent time behind the bars of justice. Countless movies have been made to feed that intrigue by depicting prison life, but most have been grossly inaccurate. The effectiveness of a prison system relies on the rehabilitation process that is enacted by each prison; this process is usually overlooked in most movies.…

Frank Darabont’s movie The Shawshank Redemption (1994) actively displays the trails and conflicts prisoners face in prison in an effort to show that everyone no matter their background endures some type of struggle. Darabont further backs up this claim by narrating the life of Andy Dufresne who was falsely accused of killing his wife. Darabont’s purpose is to generalize people’s fight against humanity, in the centralized setting of a prison so that the message is understood by the audience. Given the film’s unique angle it is easy to assume that Darabont wants his audience to come from a diverse background throughout the world. A diverse grouping of people viewing The Shawshank Redemption allows its prime message to be heard by millions of people. The title, The Shawshank Redemption, initially has a saving appeal to it. Webster's Dictionary defines "redeem" as "…to free from what distresses or harm (Webster 968)." There is the initial sense of salvation for whatever Shawshank might be. However, this sense changes when it is discovered that Shawshank is a state prison in Maine. With this knowledge the title is an oxymoron. How is it that a prison can provide redemption? The title gains its full meaning at the end of the movie. Andy Dufresne is redeemed through his experience at the prison. He learns about life there, while teaching others. He is redeemed through his second chance at life after his escape from the prison. In this sense he takes the Webster's meaning of "redeem," "to extricate from or help to overcome something detrimental (Webster 968)."…
