John comes from a tight knit family who owns their own soybean farm. His father hopes that John will attend business school and help manage the family farm. However, he wants to do something else with his life. When Ashbe asks him what he would like to become, he states, I dont know. I wanted to be a minister or something good, but I dont even know if I believe in God (1:1:280). John expresses that he wants to be a minister however, his problems in life are breaking his spirit and his belief in God diminishes as he fill his life with immoral acts like meeting up with hookers. John also says, I never used to worry about being a failure. Now, I think about it all the time. Its just I need to do something thats fulfilling (1:1:282). So, it is evident that John does not believe managing the soybean farm is rewarding. Even though he does not want to work on the farm, John feels obligated to please his father. In contrast, Ashbe comes from a impoverish family and lives in a messy dilapidated apartment with her father, who leaves her there alone. The most interesting part of the book that I reflect on is chapter 3 on the model, because it uses the paradigm shift (upside down pyramid symbolizes the servant leadership model according to, Hunter) concerning change in environment, such as doing things in a different way to change your life and meet goals. Hunter uses leadership, authority, service & sacrifice, love and will as the essential influences to align your behavior to influences with intentions and actions to lead with will power of loving what you do.…

He particularly uses the fictional religion of Bokononism and again the quote “Call me Jonah….They called me John” to highlight the fallacy in the belief, following and creation of religion as well as the saving grace which religion possesses. The name of John may be intended to echo that of two Biblical prophets, John the Baptist and John of Patmos. The former foretold the coming of Christ and ended up dead for his troubles. The latter saw elaborate visions of the end of the world but did not truly understand them. The John of Cat’s Cradle is also a prophet of the latter type as he does not truly understand the end of the world. But, he makes attempts to do so under the cover of Bokononism which claims to find some workings in the world when really there aren’t any. The book makes numerous allusions and references to Bokononism and gives background behind Bokononism to allow the reader to see the weaknesses in all types of religion and the true reason for their existence. Bokonon is the founder, leader and ‘Messiah’ of this religious system and it is his open cynicism and blatant lying that makes Bokononism so easily acceptable for almost all the character’s in the book including John. Bokonon arrived on San Lorenzo naked and supposedly reborn after…

John was always open and honest with his words with a no-holds-barred vocabulary, but he would always speak with motivation and try to empower others. Good yet daring people like John are rare to come across. I don’t know any other man who would put others’ lives before their own. John noticed after he was banished that for once in his life he was alone but he wasn’t completely alone. His group to him, sad to say, were seen as somewhat useless and pathetic, he realized he needed to take responsibility and doesn’t abandon them. Hopefully another kind-hearted person like John will come along. One who doesn’t abandon others in times…
