REACTION PAPER: The documentary about the secrets of Rizal’s Family

The documentary focuses on the secrets behind the house/mansion that belong to the family of Teodora Alonzo and its demolition in Biñan, Laguna. It has three different interesting topics; the quarrel between Teodora Formoso against his husband Jose Maria Alonzo and Teodora Alonzo, the legitimacy of Teodora Alonzo as a child, and the controversial demolition of the mansion.
To spoil it out, the documentary started with the questionable family tree that Jose Rizal made. It is interestingly noticeable that the branches leading to his mother side, Teodora Alonzo was left unwritten. From this very reason, our thoughts may be saying that Rizal is hiding something about his family. This is also my thinking when I saw the family three, but later on weakened when I’ve seen the facts that Rizal have wrote some information about the family of Teodora Alonzo. (These documents are at the Rizal Library in Ateneo de Manila University). What’s the secret all about? It all started with the quarrel between Jose Alonzo (brother of Teodora Alonzo) and his wife Teodora Formoso. It is when Jose Maria Alonzo, after having travels from Europe came home and knew that his wife is having an affair to another man. So he locked his wife in a room and asked his sister Teodora Alonzo to watch over Toedora Formoso. (Teodora Alonzo was in the side of Jose Maria). When Teodora Alonzo served a food to Formoso, it was not eaten by Formoso and rather fed it to a dog and suddenly the dog died. This is the reason why Teodora Alonzo was imprisoned for two years. She was accused by Formoso that Doña Teodora is trying to poison her. There is also a story that Jose Maria de Alberto had an affair with Saturnina, his niece which become pregnant and give birth to Soledad. To conceal the shame, Saturnina with his mother Teodora Alonzo leave for a long vacation and later on come back with a child. This child was claimed by Teodora Alonzo but most of the people hesitated to believe and is said that the child differs from the other child of Doña Teodora, this newborn child was the most beautiful sibling of Rizal.
On the issue of being an illegitimate child of Teodora Alonzo, the story goes like this: Lorenzo Alonzo de Alberto (father of Teodora Alonzo) had a fixed marriage to a little girl named Paula Florentino before living with Brijida Quintos (the mother of Teodora Alonzo), of course, the relationship honoured by the law is the fix marriage making Paula Florentino the legitimate wife. Since it is a fixed marriage, they never had a child. So it is easy to say that the children of Lorenzo Alonzo to Brijida Quintos are illegitimate. Lorenzo Alonzo is recognized by the Spaniards and has owned a title given by the Dominicans as he helped them in their missions in the Indo-China. This title makes him connected and tied on the Spanish government. Another thing is that the title is transferrable to his child after he died. So to keep the strong connection to the Spanish government, Jose Maria Alonzo de Alberto decided to be a legitimate child and avowed himself the son of Lorenzo Alberto and Paula Florentino. This is under the consent of Teodora Alonzo and his other siblings.
On the issue of the house that was owned by the Alonzo Family in Biñan, Laguna(now controversially being demolished), it gives us an indication that the Alonzo Family really have a quarrel on that time because when Rizal was sent to study in Biñan, he lived on his aunt’s house instead of living to the Alonzo’s mansion. (This was proven under my first argument on the above explanation)
With its historical background, it is upsetting to say that this old mansion that is more than two hundred years old were in fact considered as a historical landmark is now being demolish parts by parts and will be moved in Bataan. Yes, the house will still be existing but never the less, its preservation will not be as natural as it is first located in Biñan, Laguna. What most distressing about this is that the house will be remove for the building of a starbucks coffee in replaced to it.

The movie “Jose Rizal” is all about our National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal – Hislife and works, his struggles in order to free his countrymen from abuse, until his death under the hands of the Spaniards who occupied our country for a very longtime. Most of the scenes of the film took place during Rizal’s imprisonment at Dapitan wherein he meets Taviel, a Spanish officer, who will eventually defend him on his trial in court. During their meeting, Taviel asks Rizal everything about him and his works through various questions. Every answer that Rizal brought out from his mouth made Taviel realize that Rizal was indeed an innocent man. On the course of their conversation, Rizal talks about the making of his Two Novels “Noli Me Tangere” and its sequel “El Filibusterismo” which are both anti-Spanish Novels that depicts how the Spaniards rule the Philippines and how the rights of the Filipinos were abolished. Rizal portrayed himself on the said Novels – as Crisostomo Ibarra on “Noli Me Tangere” and as Simeon on “El Filibusterismo.”Going through with the movie, while Rizal is telling his story to Taviel, the scene on the movie switches from his life story then to his portrayal on his Novels. Sometimes the scene gets very difficult to follow because of the sudden switches during the scenes on the movie most especially during the time that his first novel was on the process of writing. Rizal, a brave and a man of his word, was never afraid whatever theconsequences he may suffer because of his writings that are against the friars and also to Spaniards. His goal was to free the Philippines from the unjust government of Spanish colony. In summary, the movie talks mostly of Rizal’s life until his death and the creation of his great novels. The actors and actresses who acted on the movie did a great job presenting how it was during Rizal’s time even though the said events in Rizal’s life were just written in books.…

The film also works through a series of flashback showing Rizal as a genius, a write, a doctor, an artist, a lover, a friend, a brother, a son that gives texture to his character. It shows the great explanation of the Philippine history, the nationalism and heroism in a non-violent manner, though, there were times that the characters speak in Spanish language and I couldn’t understand it unless I will read the subtitles. I could also say that the other characters weren’t having any difficulties in reciting their Spanish lines. He is arrested by the Spanish authorities upon his return to the Philippines in 1892. He is sent to Dapitan in Mindanao where the Spanish authorities can keep a watchful eye on him. It is there that the meets the love of his life, Josephine Bracken, although the movie does not devote much attention to this love affair. When a rebellion breaks out in 1896 the Spanish governor orders that Rizal be moved…

When my students go through Jose Rizal’s expenses in Europe, they note that his biggest and most regular expenses were for the purchase of books and postage stamps. This is not surprising because we all know that he liked to read and study, and to write home a lot because he was homesick in Madrid. Students also note that he bought 1/10 of a lottery ticket every week. When I ask what he did with a ball of yarn, students reply that Rizal probably had a pet cat, and that he used the yarn to darn the holes in his socks or to tie up the maid for kinky sex.…

In comparing the life of our two great Filipinos, one can clearly see the differences in their background. Rizal was talented, but moreover, blessed to be born into a good family who can afford to send him to prestigious schools. Bonifacio, on the other hand, was born into a poor family. One can clearly point out that the reason for the different courses of action taken by the two are very well linked with their backgrounds. Rizal is the Idealist, wherein he used his intellect in making known his feelings. Through his writings, he was able to define what he saw wrong. Switching sides, Bonifacio, although intelligent himself, resorted to physical warfare as the means of making his beliefs known to the public. No matter how much we want to identify which of the two men was better, there’s no point in doing so. They may be similar in their goals, but their ways were different.…

There are several references to a sliding or gliding dance,- a waltz, from the 16th century including the representations of the printer H.S. Beheim. The French philosopher Montaigne wrote of a dance he saw in 1580 in Augsburg, where the dancers held each other so closely that their faces touched. Kunz Haas, of approximately the same period wrote that, "Now they are dancing the godless, Weller or Spinner." "The vigorous peasant dancer, following an instinctive knowledge of the weight of fall, utilizes his surplus energy to press all his strength into the proper beat of the measure, thus intensifying his personal enjoyment in dancing". The wide, wild steps of the country people became shorter and more elegant when introduced to higher society. Hans Sachs wrote of the dance in his 1568 Eygentliche Beschreibung aller Stände (1568).…
