“The Scarlet Ibis” Critical Thinking

1. In what ways does the setting at the beginning of the story set the *tone* for the rest? Support your answers with evidence.
-Right when we began reading “The Scarlet Ibis’ by James Hurst, we were able to the identify the elements in the first two paragraphs that presented foreshadowing. The tone was gloomy, grim, and somewhat mournful. There were rotting flowers and flowers that would be found in a graveyard, a bleeding tree and colors of grays and browns. He saw a grindstone which was what initiated the entire flashback. What was interesting was that this setting was what reminded the narrator of his younger brother Doodle. Rotting flowers? A bleeding tree? This gloomy setting was one of the components in the story that helped set the somber mood for the rest story.

2. How does the narrator treat his brother? What motivates his behavior? Do you agree with his actions?
-Most of the plot revolved around Doodle and his brother’s feelings and thoughts towards him. After finding out that his little brother was disabled, he had the mentality that he has an “invalid brother”. He even planned to smother Doodle with pillow. After he saw that Doodle was “all there”, he changed his mind and decided to make his brother “normal” but not for the good of his little brother, but for his own personal gain. He pushed his brother to the limit and unfortunately, Doodle died because of it. His different behaviors throughout the story was motivated by many different emotions. His actions towards his brother, more specifically at the swamp, was motivated by his shame and insecurity because of Doodle’s disability. Personally, I agree and disagree with his actions. I agreed with his actions because he was the reason why Doodle was motivated to go out and feel “normal”. He was the reason why Doodle learned how to stand and walk on his own. On the other hand, the brother pushed Doodle to the limit and the end result was him

    In the story, the narrator's parents let him tote around their weak son wherever the older brother wanted. If something bad happened to Doodle, there wouldn’t be an adult there to help with the situation. This later happens later in the story, where Doodle is dying and the narrator can do nothing about it because he is just a twelve year old boy. Also, it seems that Doodle should be staying more at home. In the story it says “with his weak heart this strain would probably kill him” (Hurst, 163) and, “His skin was very sensitive” (Hurst, 164). This says that Doodle probably wasn’t fit for the outdoors and could probably get hurt very easily. The parents should probably not have put Doodle into the inexperienced hands of the young narrator.…

    Was it the narrator’s fault that Doodle died? Yes it was, and there is lots of evidence to back up that view. First of all, had the older brother not been so obsessed with making Doodle normal, than most likely he wouldn’t have been out in the storm in the first place. They are only in the storm because the older brother wanted Doodle to be able to run when he went to school. However, it’s not as kind as it sounds; the brother wasn’t trying to teach him to run because Doodle wanted to.     Another effective foreshadowed example in this story is when the ibis dies alone, helpless, and in discomfort, it foreshadows that will later on happen to Doodle. Also, it effects the overall story and theme, from contentment and hope, to regret and mourning. In addition, in this book the author uses foreshadowing by using the setting. Hurst takes gloomy and dangerous weather to use to foreshadow a fearful event, which is Doodle’s death. Another example of foreshadowing is shown in the story “The Cask of Amontillado”. In the short story, there is a line that says, “And I toast to your long life” (Poe 235). This foreshadows the death of Fortunato, because it says how Montresor wants revenge on Fortunato and he later on kills him. Furthermore, the author uses foreshadowing by using a moment of enjoyment and allows Poe to add in a line of foreshadowing. While reading, it is hard to expect the foreshadowing because they are having a toast, but while Montresor and Fortunato are having a toast, Montresor’s toast foreshadows his enemy’s death. From this line, it is effective to the story, because it gives the reader an idea of what Montresor’s revenge will be and how…
