The Scarlet Ibis
At the start of “The Scarlet Ibis,” the unnamed narrator writes: “It’s strange that all this is so clear to me, now that summer has long since fled and time has had its way.” As you study this short story and examine the way the narrator feels about the events he relates, imagine how Doodle’s death has affected the rest of his life. In a minimum of 250 words, proofread, with a creative title, write a short piece imagining what became of the narrator after the events covered in the short story. Why is he telling this story now, and who is his audience? Imagine (but do not limit yourself to) the following: what was his relationship with his parents after Doodle’s death?

Only Mom, Dad, and Aunt Nicey know the real story. Everynow and then I zone off in class, especially in agriculture and food science, which I am very good at, to think about what I could’ve done differently.
One day in English, we were asked to talk about a life changing incident in our lives. I have had this assignment before but I was to sad to talk about such a subject. We go around the circle. People talk about their golden goal in a soccer game or their first job. All they talked about were happy things. It was my turn.
“Nine years ago I had a little brother who couldn’t walk”. I could see people’s faces get more serious. “He was a very happy kid who was determined. I was a little embarrassed to have him around me because I had to carry him everyday in a little cart. We would go out to the swamp near our house and I would try to teach him to walk. Finally, on his sixth birthday, we showed off our work to our parents. I couldn’t have been more proud and happy at the same time.” I started to tear up just a bit. “Time went by and I had this goal for him to be able to do all sorts of activities in a year. He sadly wasn’t able to do so but towards the final weeks before our deadline, I started to really push him. One day, it was raining and as we were running back to the house, I sped up. I was just trying to make him keep up with me. After a while I couldn’t see him. I went back the route I came and saw him lying their”. The class leaned in as I was about to say my last words with tears flooding my eyes. “He was

Doodle, a younger disabled brother in James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis”, is uniquely symbolic to the beautiful red bird seen dying in his yard. The scarlet ibis, like Doodle, both are exotic in many wonderful ways. For one instance, the ibis is beautiful, while Doodle has a creative imagination. The ibis is a rare phenomenal bird, likewise, Doodle is an extraordinary boy. He is sensitive, like when he sees Old Woman Swamp. “His eyes were round with wonder as he gazed about him, and his little hands began to stroke the rubber grass. Then he began to cry. “It’s so pretty, so pretty, pretty, pretty.” (318). Despite the Ibis and Doodle’s magnificent traits, both ibis and Doodle suffer from a horrible storm. The ibis faced a storm that blew it all…

My conclusion is Doodle dies because he was pushed too hard. I think the brother feels guilty because if he would have never left Doodle he wouldn’t have died. Lesson be learned don’t be so pushy and selfish because it never helps only adds more burden. The Scarlet Ibis and Doodle where very similar and his brother can still see the…

Symbolism and imagery are the most important devices in the story. Especially the storm and scarlet ibis create strong feelings of mystery and remorse with the help of imagery.”The lightning was near now…”,”…thunder roared out, hiding even the sound of the sea.”,”The sun disappeared and the darkness descended almost like night.” In the Doodle’s death, there was a storm that was almost like chasing them and the lightning was telling them something terrible was about to happen.”…found him huddled beneath a red nightshade bush beside the road”,”He lay very awkwardly, with his head thrown far back, making his vermilion neck appear unusually long and slim.” Although it may not seem very important the scarlet ibis becomes an unforgettable symbol after Doodle’s death. When the brother found Doodle’s body he refers to him as “my fallen scarlet ibis”. The scarlet ibis was described as delicate and graceful and the way Doodle buried it to honor it makes the brother think Doodle like the beautiful scarlet ibis that was thrown there by the storm and reached it limits like…

Some days were slow and other days were extremely busy. One day Nicole was sitting at her desk filling out paper work when a boy thirteen years old on a stretcher came in beaten with bruises and two broken legs. She was the nurse assigned to him. “It was the most terrible thing I have ever seen.” Nicole exclaimed. The boy was beaten with sticks by three boys in his school for being gay. Nicole could not believe that someone would do such a thing. She stayed with the boy the entire time he was in the hospital. She gave him stiches in his face and leg. The boy had to get casts put on both of his legs and was in a wheel chair for the next six months. Nicole donated five thousand dollars to a stop bullying foundation to help raise awareness of bullying in public schools. Auston, my twin brother, was still asleep. I rushed to his room, shook him, and screamed to get up because we will miss the bus. Auston jumped out of bed and started to throw clothes on to himself. In a panic, I put clothes on, picked up my bag, and ran out the door. Both of us sprinted to the bus stop. Sweat dripped down our faces and the sound of books clapping together grew loud. The bus stop was 5 minutes away from our house. It was 9:00. When we arrived at the bus stop, the bus had already departed. My brother looked at me with a devious look. I knew that look. He was about to start an argument with me, but I wasn’t going to take it. No matter what happened, arguing with me wasn’t going to solve anything. I suggested “Let’s start walking to school”. He agreed knowing there was no other option.…

    Life Changing Event

Throughout my life I can definitely say that I have one life-changing event that rises above the rest. In my junior year of high school, 2008, a very close friend of mine, Renay, passed away unexpectedly. At only 16, she fell victim to a drunk driving accident. Renay was a dear friend to me. We had a special friendship and connection we shared through dance and sports. I miss the days when life was simple; we would go to the mall to hangout and shop for shoes. This was one of our favorite things to do together. One year for her birthday, which happened to coincide with spring break, she and her family went down to Rosarito. Three days before her birthday she and her cousin were driving back to their hotel from a restaurant where her cousin was drinking. As they were driving in Rosarito there are very winding roads. Renay’s cousin was speeding and lost control of the vehicle, unfortunately going down a cliff. The morning I got the call saying she was in an accident and didn’t make it was the day my life had changed, I remember falling to the ground in tears thinking is this an awful dream I will eventually wake up from. The answer was no, she was gone and I would never be able to hold or hug her again. Joseph T. O’Connor explains in his article “A view from Mount Ritter” “It’s funny how these memories keep coming back to me as if it were just yesterday”(13). I agree with O’Connor there is not a day that passes by that I do not think of Renay and her tragic loss. My friends and I did so many fundraisers to help her family bring her body back from Rosarito. We were able to help her family tremendously. Her funeral was in Ohio where she was originally from, the car ride up to Ohio from San Diego was quit and sad because we all knew with everything we did to help her family would not bring back our sweet Renay. As a result of the death of my best…

Staring at the children before me, I couldn’t believe how our plans had gone disarray. My thoughts were disrupted by the noisy chatter among the students and the shouts across the room. The paper aeroplane which zoomed past my face jolted me out of my daze. I wanted to dig a hole in the ground and hid in it forever, never wanting to come out. Salty tears streamed down my face and I felt so embarrassed of my incompetence to control the group of students. From my friend’s expressions of confusion and embarrassment, I knew that they were feeling the exact same way. I hadn’t imagined that our project would become a complete disaster as I began to mentally replay the events that had occurred a few days ago.…
