George R. R. Martin’s short story about zombies does not focus on the zombie apocalypse as so many stories and movies do in today’s popular zombie culture. In what can only be assumed to be a far distant future, Martin’s zombies are surgically altered humans whose brains have been replaced by a synthetic alternative. This turns these formerly alive humans into form of cheap, or slave, labor that is exploited on planets where most humans are either unwilling, or unable to work (Martin, 2008). Martin’s zombies in this story harken back to the origins of the modern zombie mythos. Those being derived from the African slaves who toiled on the sugar plantations of Hatti (Estes, 2012). I do not think it is any coincidence that Martin’s zombies are…

It is evident that the recent outbreak of the z-virus that is sweeping across the Asian continent has created a zombie epidemic that has claimed many human lives and continues to spread rapidly. The number of those affected by the virus is currently in the thousands and continues to grow by the hour. If left unchecked, this epidemic could spread across the ocean and into our territories within days. Seeing how fast the disease spreads and how catastrophic it could become if it were to enter the U.S., we need to take prompt and decisive actions to halt the virus on its path of destruction. The anthropology of death is a fascinating field of study which depicts the conceptualization of death, the modes of death, and from various funerary rites/rituals that a Western society might even find repulsive or enchanting. Why is it that the most appealing form of media among kids is about superheroes overcoming adversity or death, and then the hero comes in to save the day? The answer is quite simple, because humans find death interesting. Is it due to the fact that no one lives forever? Humans know this fact of life but they still wish for this goal of cheating death. A common occurrence is through funeral and mortuary rites where there is the belief in a future life and in the survival of the spirit (Malinowski 20). Hal Duncan’s “The Tomb and the Womb: Death and Rebirth in World Myth and Mythic Fiction,” noted that "Where tales of death and re-becoming offer a holistic view of a world of ephemeral forms in flux, tales of death and resurrection offer a promise that a hero can survive, that a person of destiny can harrow death, come out the other side" (Duncan 1).The supporting point in this discussion is with respect to the belief of symbolic immortality which is a powerful vehicle discussed in Antonius C.G.M. Robben’s book “Death, Mourning, and Burial.”…

Zombies. It seems like the whole US population is absolute in love with the idea of the so called "walking dead." And why not? Nothing is more fascinating than for the dead to come back to life to eat the living. The topic that I would like to address for my zombie project is a more efficient mode of transportation in order to survive a zombie apocalypse. In The Zombie Survival Guide, Max Brooks he explains different means of transportation but limits them to water or air travel. In an apocalypse, healthy surviving humans should not be restricted to their means of travel. In order to stay alive, an adequate form of transportation is a necessity. Walking is too dangerous and slow, while a standard car purposes many different problems. A solar powered or a hydrogen fuel cell car are optimum modes of transportation during a zombie apocalypse.…

I looked to my left then to my right, it was dark all around, except for the light emanating from the flashlight mounted on my gun. I cradled my assault rifle, it was my lifeline, if it was gone, I was dead, or worse... Alive. I heard a shriek, not from a human, but from a zombie...... I looked down the alleyway ahead it was fully dark now, I heard running footsteps behind me. I turned around as fast as I could. A blood covered zombie was running toward me, I was scared for my life. I chopped the zombie down with my rifle, the muzzle flashes lighting up the ally. Suddenly I heard the blood curdling cries of many zombie- oh no, I made to much noise. Now they were pouring in from the street into the alleyway I was in. Around forty of them were coming towards me, I turned around to try to escape.. at least five more in that direction. i sprayed the five zombies down with my gun, pulled the pin on a grenade, dropped it, and sprinted in that direction. In the Voodoo religion, zombies are said to be people brought back from the dead through magical means by priest called bokors (Radford, 2013). The bokors would capture part of a person’s soul called the zombie astral. The bokors might sell the soul to people who wanted power or he might keep the soul and make it do work. The day starts like every other day does. The sun shining, birds chirping, but something will not feel right. People start to limp instead of walk, they are no longer talking, just moaning and groaning, and everyone reeks of rotting flesh and meat. The only problem with zombies is they are not who they once were; they are now creatures who walk around trying to eat anything living. Plenty of movies are created on the idea that everyone either gets their brains eaten or turned into zombies. Yes, most people think that a zombie apocalypse may not ever happen, but there is still a chance an apocalypse can happen. Just because people die in the movies does not mean people cannot survive in real life. Knowing the zombie apocalypse may happen one day, the three most important rules to remember are being prepared, maintaining protection, and staying aware.…
