The Role Of Vision In Radiography
Introduction
Vision is a vital role in medical imaging and the visual ability of the radiologist interpreting the image is largely overlooked (Halpenny et al. 2012). To understand how vision plays a role in radiography, psychophysics is studied to understand the relationship between the physical stimulus and sensation experienced by a person (Lu et al. 2014). The radiologist has a role of interpreting radiographic images hence eyesight is an important factor that needs to be frequently examined. There have been significant reports from radiologists about eye strain and fatigue due to the continued hours spent examining digital images (Krupinski 2011). There are three distinct layers in the eye with the outer layer consisting of the cornea and sclera, the middle layer containing the iris, ciliary body and choroid and lastly the inner layer which has the retina (Galloway et al. 2006). The cornea’s main functions is to protect the eye against infection and to refract and transmit the light to the lens and retina. The iris controls the size of the pupil, thus limiting the amount of light that reaches the retina. The ciliary body controls the shape of the lens and the choroid provides nutrients and oxygen to the eye. The retina contains neurons that capture and processes light. Light enters the eye via the outer components and travels through the neurons of the retina and is accordingly captured by the photoreceptors present at the back of the retina. The neurons then translate the visual information received from the eye into nerve impulses that travel from the optic nerve to the lateral geniculate nucleus to be interpreted (Willoughby et al. 2010). The development of PACS (picture archiving and communication system) has revolutionised image viewing in westernised healthcare systems. Compared to film, digital imaging offers the flexibility and convenience for medical professionals. A consequence to PACS usage is that the radiologist would spend a majority of their working day in front of a computer monitor. Even when the radiologist is not reporting on images, they would still be facing a monitor through various meetings. With the use of the tests mentioned, measuring visual acuity should be mandatory for radiologists and be consistently examined in regular periods (Halpenny et al.

    Protecting the patient from unnecessary radiation exposure include not only the Cardinal Principles of radiation protection, but also the behaviors of imaging personnel towards each patient. It is often asked, "Why do we need to discuss patient protection when it is the patient who is being imaged and therefore being exposed to radiation?" "And is not all radiation exposure made within safe limits so that patient protection is not really possible?" The answer centers on the concept of ALARA, which is the basic principle of radiation protection. Again, the operator of any medical imaging radiographic equipment is mandated to use as low as is reasonably achievable radiation dose to provide the highest quality radiographic image. Any unsafe exposure beyond the ALARA principle is considered unnecessary excess exposure. Not just anyone can be a satisfactory substitute to advocate patient radiation protection through equipment operation in the place of an educated imaging professional. Though radiographers are not the exclusive gatekeepers to thousands of rads of radiation dosed upon a trusting public annually, they are the educated professionals who practice daily safe exposure principles. Practicing ALARA as a form of patient radiation safety while providing diagnostic information for radiological interpretation is the focus of this issue. We will look at how radiographers make the most of the Cardinal rules of time, distance, and shielding as part of the ALARA mandate to protect patients from unnecessary radiation exposure. These principles are part of the continuum of competent imaging and positioning skills to bring about radiation safety for patients and personnel.     The Eye is the organ of sight. Eyes enable people to perform daily tasks and to learn about the world that surrounds them. Sight, or vision, is a rapidly occurring process that involves continuous interaction between the eye, the nervous system, and the brain. <br><br>When someone looks at an object, what he/she is really seeing is the light that the object reflects, or gives off. This reflected light passes through the lens and falls on to the retina of the eye. Here, the light induces nerve impulses that travel through the optic nerve to the brain, where it makes an image of the object, and then that image is passed on to muscles and glands.<br><br>The eye is well protected. It lies within a bony socket of the skull. The eyelids guard it in front. They blink an average of once every six seconds. This washes the eye with the salty secretion from the tear, or lachrymal, glands. Each tear gland is about the size and shape of an almond. These glands are located behind the upper eyelid at the outer corner of the eye. After passing over the eye, the liquid from the gland is drained into the nose through the tear duct at the inner corner of the eye.<br><br>Heavy laughter or crying causes muscles in the upper eyelid to squeeze the lachrymal gland. This produces tears that flow too fast to be drained away. The eyelashes catch many flying particles that otherwise would enter the eye. As further protection, the eyelids automatically close when an object suddenly moves close to the eye.<br><br><br><b>Parts Of the Eye</b><br>The eye is made of 3 coats, or tunics. The outermost coat consists of the cornea and the sclera. The middle coat contains the main blood supply to the eye and consists of the choroid, the ciliary body, and the Iris.
