The Role Of Saturated Fat In The Modern Western Diet
Saturated fat is frequently consumed in the Modern western diet and is highly abundant in places such as meat and dairy products. Research (5) analyze the existing controversy on whether consuming saturated fat is beneficial or not. Present (2) studies contribute to the discrepancy because they don’t consider the variation saturated fatty acids (SFA) have on individual people. Factors that contribute to the differences are genes, diet nutrients, obesity level, exercise, and lifestyle. Insufficient (2) information is known about individual types of SFA; the (4) small LDL are associated to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The recommendation (2) for saturated fat has changed over time, currently, it is recommended that less than 7% of total energy comes from saturated fat. While examining advantages and disadvantages of saturated fat, research finds that SFA raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL), increases low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and also increase liver fat. …show more content…
SFA help meet total fat energy needs, which are necessary for proper metabolic function. Another (2) advantage to SFA is the increase of HDL cholesterol HDL is important because it removes free cholesterol from extra hepatic tissues. It also transfers cholesterol esters to VLDL or delivers them to the liver: There, HDL is degraded and cholesterol is released. These actions improve the ability to move cholesterol to sites where it is required. Additionally, the movement of free cholesterol and cholesterol esters help prevent cholesterol deposit and plaque buildup in blood

    There are both good fats and bad fats; staying away from bad fats can be easy if you know what you are looking for. The fats that are bad for us are saturated, and trans fats and the better fats are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Saturated fats turn solid at room temperature because they have a chemical makeup where the carbon atoms are saturated with hydrogen atoms. Trans-fatty acids are fats that have been created in an industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils so they can become more solid.
