The Role of Hbcus in American Society
For almost two hundred years, Historically Black Colleges and Universities or HBCUs have played a pivotal role in the education of African-American people, and negro people internationally. These schools have provided the majority of black college graduates at the Graduate and Post-Graduate level; schools such as Hampton University, Morehouse University, Spellman University and Howard University are four universities at the forefront of the advanced education of blacks. For sometime there has been a discussion on whether or not these institutes should remain in existence or if they are just another form of racism. There were also concerning the quality of education provided at these institutions. In my opinion, from the evidence provided in our own world today, HBCUs are very important and significant in the education of black people throughout the nation, and are essential to our society. With regards to the opinion that the existence of HBCUs is in fact, a mellowed form of racism, one must first remember the history behind the origins of HBCUs Many people believe that these institutions have outlived their purpose because we live in a fully integrated society and these institutions stand as hallmarks of segregation. However, by thinking this way is not an analyzing the complete picture because one must bear in mind that HBCUs are old and hallowed institutions of higher learning established in a time when talented, desiring and tenacious African-Americans wished to go to school but could not attend places such as the established white universities of the time. Most people who believe that HBCUs are no longer useful also believe that because the law forbids the practice of racism HBCUs should be shut down. However, few take into consideration the many white historically white institutions with a legacy of turning away talented African-Americans. What about these schools?     Harvard has grown to become one of the world’s most prestigious and well-respected institute of higher education, because of its success in high learning. Atticus is also respected, however, for different reasons. The black people recognized him for his fairness towards their community.     Howard University is a private school that was founded/ created in 1867. 7,147 people haven’t graduated from there. It is in Washington D.C. This is in Virginia. This school has 33% male and 67% female. I think this is very impressive because, since I am a girl, this is a very great thing. It shows that women are taking more responsibility in their lives. At first I thought Black Colleges would be bad because they have a separate college for black people and usually black people are discriminated. I thought it would be a cheap little ugly place, but they are very impressive. This essay, allowed me to actually stop and appreciate what is right in front of me. It allowed me to see that black colleges and universities are like other colleges and even better. It doesn’t matter the race of the school, it just matters what you are learning. I think that this report really helped clear my mind of all those stupid racial things my teachers say. I just noticed that you never hear about black colleges. I think that is soo stupid. It shows again that they are trying to say that black people are less important than white people. They are saying white colleges are better than black colleges, but that’s wrong. What is weird is that Howard University has 60.9 % of its classes with fewer than 20 students. Most colleges I would think have a lot more students in a class room. But that is a good thing, because more students get one on one attention. Black colleges seem much more teachy. It seems like they are more into education. Another good thing about Howard is that they have a very diverse student body. The student body office has people with different cultures, races, and genders. This is promoting the idea of equality.     The reason I chose to attend a historically black college/university is simply because of the reputation historically black colleges and universities hold of being one big family. At other state or non HBCU schools you may find that students feel like they are just a number. I know people who generally love their non HBCU schools because of the various job opportunities, networking, etc. that they are exposed to while being there; but they complain about not having relationships with their professors and not feeling apart of the school as a person. At an HBCU you walk in knowing that you are moving into a home away from home. You know those kinds of neighborhoods you see on TV where the neighbors randomly bring you cakes and pies on move in day? That’s how I felt my freshman year moving to Johnson C. Smith University. I graduated high school searching for a sense of belonging and I knew I could get that at an HBCU. The personal concern we have for one another to succeed is a beautiful thing that you may not find any other place but at a historically black college. At HBCUs students seem to receive more support. I get help not only from my colleagues but also from my advisors, mentors, and professors. That’s all I really wanted. I had and still have the will to succeed and do what it takes to graduate and be successful but I needed that push. I needed to attend a school where people cared if I was there and cared when I wasn’t. I didn’t want to waste four years of my life feeling stressed, overwhelmed and alone.     However, there remains an underlying tension between students and the surrounding community. From the student perspective, there are constant threats to the safety of the student body from “locals” who have the misconception that because the student attends an expensive university, they have assets that can be taken.
