Thomas L. Friedman’s Beirut to Jerusalem graciously dons its readers with a comprehensive overview of the conflicts of the middle east with a focalization of Israel and Lebanon. From a first hand experience, Friedman deftly navigates the politics, religion, and local stories during a ten year time span (1979-1988). This time span covers much of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the civil war of Lebanon. Friedman spends his first five years living in Beirut, and the next five years living in Jerusalem. He takes from these times a multitude of personal and local short stories to give a comprehensive overview of the life of a common man. From these stories he weaves a unique equilibrium of violence, nefariousness, and heart. Friedman manages to maintain the novels’ material equally pertaining to Beirut and Jerusalem in an attempt to show two sides of the story. Friedman’s favoritism for human life and disdain of senseless brutality, government, and corruption is what gives this novel its vibe. Thomas L. Friedman’s Beirut to Jerusalem uses a opinionated historical biography to…

The Kite Runner is a book that was written by Khaled Hosseini from a young boy’s perspective named Amir who lived with his father, Baba, and two Hazaras named Ali and Hassan in Kabul, Afghanistan. They lived here during the Russian War and had escaped to America to find peace and happiness. We learn about Amir’s childhood struggles and his efforts to be what his father wanted him to be and to be a good friend like Hassan is to him. Amir knows that Hassan is better than what he deserves; he knows he is guilty through his secrets and his selfishness. Materialistically, Amir and his father had a good life and treated Ali and Hassan quite well, but we discover that there is a reason for the good treatment that they receive from mainly Baba. Amir witnesses a very tragic experience that Hassan is put through with Assef and he does not take a stand. Amir is cowardice unlike Hassan. Although it may seem that Amir is confused with what he should do about what he has done and the secrets that he hides, his final decision will affect the rest of his life. The first character who fills an important role in the story is Hassan, who brings the element of tragedy to the story. Hosseini effectively develops Hassan's character at the beginning of the novel by developing his loyal friendship with Amir. Hosseini's portrayal of Hassan's undying loyalty for Amir during the beginning of the novel makes it even more heart-wrenching when Hassan is raped, because at this point in the story the reader has grown attached to Hassan's loyal demeanor. The reader is left devastated after Hassan is raped, because not only does Amir not stand up for Hassan despite their close relationship, but they also move away from each other. It becomes apparent after this that the two best friends will not see each other for a long time. This is a…

Back to the novel, we may think Karim as an cold-bloody boy who treats other people in an unconcerned way, who made the great decision to take a risk with the other girl. The reason why he did it is that he has been hurt before, because of the death of Nada. At last, he also hurt heart of Maha, who fell in love with this brave boy. Giving an example: when Maha was going to have a bitter quarrel with Karim, he didn’t choose to give an apology or explanation to Maha. On the contrary, he’d rather run away to escape from the reality in a sulk than have a talk with her in a calm mood. That’s what I’m most surprised at, too. At last, it is Maha’s death that makes Karim realize how wrong he used to be in the past days spent with Maha. He is going to face the life with a more positive heart.…

Since the dawn of time, Lebanon has been an expression attributed to a small land located in the center of the world, laying side by side with the Mediterranean Sea and featuring four clearly distinct seasons. In the winter, visitors from all around the world fly over to enjoy the snowy mountains of Faraya. In the Autumn, villages become crowded with enthusiasts who love to enjoy the chilly Lebanese breeze. In the spring and in the summer, days become nights and nights become days where party goers and tourists from around the globe invade every existing resort by the sea and up the hills. A land where people are welcoming, a land where the sea and the mountains are only 30 minutes apart. This same land today faces the bitter truth of regression in several sectors and mostly in tourism.…
