The Right Good Book Is Always a Book of Travel; It Is About a Life’s Journey”

Critical Lens

“The right good book is always a book of travel; it is about a life’s journey”. This quote by H.M. Tomlinson means that the people in the book grow throughout the story and can take people to different places by making them think of new ideas that go against their true thinking. I agree with the quote and interpretation. Two works of literature that help support the quote are To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and “1984” by George Orwell. Literary elements that prove the quote true are characterization, and person versus society.

One literary work that proves the quote true is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Atticus Finch who is a lawyer in a racist town has to represent Tom Robinson who is wrongfully convicted African man. Through characterization Atticus Finch shows how he does not care about skin color and that he only cares about justice. Atticus has to try and persuade an entire town to show how color does not matter. Atticus shows his strength by persevering through all the name calling and not giving up on his client. Through person vs. society Atticus also shows his strength by making many people change their minds about racism. Though Atticus does not win the case he is able to take people into a different mind set or place and make them think of things that they never would have thought of.

Another literary work that proves the quote true is “1984” by George Orwell. Winston is an ordinary man who has different thoughts about where he lives. Winston Smith lives in Oceania which is a place where people can not have their own thoughts or ideas because Big Brother controls everything. Through characterization Winston shows how he is strong by breaking the rules set by Big Brother. Winston breaks the rules by talking to people about rebelling and also doing things like staying out of the sight of his telescreen and having a journal to preserve history. Winston tries to overcome all these rules through

In the beginning Winston goes against the law and secretly buys a journal to write in, even though if he is caught he will be taken away forever. He would have to face Big Brother, but Winston was willing to take the chance. Many times he reads throughout the novel “ War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength”. Which is the official saying of the Party. While attempting to write in the journal Winston found himself only being able to write “Down with Big Brother” repeatedly. He always found himself confused on what to do but always believed that he would never conform into one of them!…

Atticus firmly believes in the previous statement because he said “As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it—whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash.” Atticus at this moment is livid at the fact that Bob Ewell won the case and is upset that Tom has to stay in prison because he was cheated by white man. Also he says that white man will eventually “pay the bill for it.” I believe that the realization of the unfair treatment of blacks and also racism is realized at the end of To Kill a Mockingbird when Heck Tate dismisses the case of Bob Ewell’s death. When Heck Tate said that Bob had it coming to him, I believe he was feeling bad for the Robinson family and was realizing the wrongdoings he had done against the blacks and wanted to help in some other…

War is peace, Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is strength. These three phrases may contradict everything that you know and have been taught, but in the “negative utopia” of George Orwell’s novel 1984 these are the slogans of the Party and of Big Brother which governs Oceania (modern day England). This society suppresses all free thinking, free enterprise, and all other freedoms. George Orwell predicts that the world will come to this if someone does not stand up to the dominant society. This someone is Winston Smith, the thoughts and actions of Winston in 1984 place him against the Party, their views, and Big Brother.…

Dating back to as far as the epic of Gilgamesh, literature has explored the most prevalent aspect of human existence, journeys. Everything is a journey in life; we go through journeys to discover things about ourselves and the world around us. It’s said that to truly learn something you have to do it yourself, but we don’t have the time to go on enough journeys to quench our cravings for answers. That’s why literature has offered us the chance to learn something, without actually doing it, so that we can learn the message from a journey, without actually going on it.…

In the book 1984 by George Orwell, many different ideas about the government and its power are discussed by the main character Winston. At one point in the book Winston says “It is impossible to found a civilization on fear and hatred and cruelty. It would never endure.” in reference to the state of the government at that point in time. However, this can be proven false by the actions of the government, the people’s response, and the determination the government uses to ensure their ultimate power and control.…

Racism has been an ongoing problem for decades and although a lot of progress has been made, racism and discrimination still exist. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee highlights Atticus Finch as a reflection to civil rights defenders. In the 1930’s people who fought the rights of blacks would face hate and violence, throughout history there have been white and black defenders of blacks who faced hate and violence, and in the novel Atticus also faces hate and violence for defending an African American man.…

“Some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negroes are not to be trusted around women – black or white. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men”. That was a quote by Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch is a man who always tries to do what is right. In the novel ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ a major theme is racism. An innocent black man is unfairly charged for raping a white girl. Throughout the book we learn about Atticus’ views on racism as well as racism being present in the novel. I feel very strongly about this topic and my views about it are very similar to Atticus’, rather than most of the Maycomb community’s.…
