The Rich Brother Tobias Wolff Analysis
“The Rich Brother” by Tobias Wolff reminded me the story of Cain and Abel, however, the conclusion of Wolff’s story contrasts greatly with the rivalry of Cain and Abel. Pete, unlike Cain, sees the blessing of having a brother. But, only after realizing he must be his brother’s keeper. Cain and Abel struggle with personal conflict like Pete and Donald but unlike Pete and Donald, Cain ended up killing his own brother while Pete just kicked Donald out of the car and drove off. Like the story of Cain and Abel “The Rich Brother” is told through the voice of a third person narrator, but unlike the two as you read on in the story of “The Rich Brother” you realize it only gives you the thoughts of Peter making it third person limited omniscient. This perspective should allow the reader to experience the story without personal remarks and personal thoughts. I wasn’t wondering who was better and more successful than the other, but as you read more of the story you realize, through the thoughts of Pete, that he is the more financially stable one and that he is living comfortably in his life.

In the story “The Rich Brother” Donald and Pete's mother and father died, and so the two men were each given a share of their family's money. There are events from the past that demonstrate a history of Pete’s prosperity allowing him freedom to do things he never thought of doing, and Donald joins a community on a rural farm. But, in the end Donald spends all his money and Pete made his money grow more from what he started with. Which ended up making Pete mad, because he would give Donald money as a loan in his mind. As Pete was driving Donald to his house he got so mad for Donald giving money to a stranger that he drove off without him. As to where in Cain and Abel, Cain and Able both brought sacrifices to God; God ended up only praising Abel. Cain got jealous because of this and killed his
