The Revenant Analysis
The Revenant is set around the middle of the United States, near the Mississippi River. Michael Punke wrote this novel as a tale of Hugh Glass’s quest for revenge after being robbed and abandoned to die. Hugh Glass was a member of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, but is separated from them for most of the story as he tries to relocate the company and his robbers. Hugh Glass had a background as a sailor and was forced to become a pirate before he joined the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. The story begins with news of the Arikara tribe attacking the fur company. These attacks caused the fur company to alter their routes and becoming much more precautious. Hugh Glass was sent up the river to scout, and noticed bear cubs while doing so. While Hugh escaped, others were not so fortunate, one even drowning himself to avoid capture by the Arikara who would surely torture him. Glass returned to struggling to survive as he journeyed up the Mississippi River while hiding from Arikara. Glass was saved from the Arikara by a Mandan, and they went to a blockhouse. The Mandan who has saved Glass, Mandeh-Pahchu, was not permitted to enter. Inside, he bought some provisions, caught up with Mandeh-Pahchu, and gave Mandeh-Pahchu his knife as thanks. Fitzgerald and Glass have a close encounter, but neither see each other or know who the other is. After they have long since passed each other, Fitzgerald discovers that Glass is still alive. Bridger makes it back to the camp and Fitzgerald is forced to enlist in the army after stabbing someone in the hand while gambling. The men from the Rocky Mountain Fur Company are having a New Year’s party due to their recent success, when Glass shows up. Glass relentlessly continues to punch Bridger, but remembering times when Bridger was kind to him, spared Bridger’s
