In today’s society many states have been concerned on the usage of cell phones while driving. This topic has been viewed by many, and discussed by multiple legislators, policemen, the federal government an, legal drivers. Their view on this issue is to not to ban the usage of cell phones, but to make it a law in every state. For instance, there is a good amount of states that have prohibited drivers from using cell phones handheld while driving. However, there are other states who agree to disagree. Meaning, there are some states whereas cell phones are banned but the police aren’t enforcing the law. So until legislators banned the use of cell phones the percentage of the death rate will rise. In conclusion, with those given points I will argue that all states in America should outlaw the usage of cell phones while driving.
First, I would like to point out some statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who have studied high school students. Studies show that about 58 percent of high school seniors and 43 percent of high school juniors were reported texting or either e-mailing while driving (Distracted Driving Laws).With that being said; I don’t think teenagers realize the consequences that they are putting themselves and others in when they decide to use their cell phone behind the wheel. In this generation, it has been made a common goal by teenagers to obtain their license. However, I feel as though that the procedures that are taken aren’t advanced enough for first time drivers. In spite of the Driver’s Ed Book only covers the main topics of driving it doesn’t give the driver a real experience. When beginning to drive on the highway, there are only but so many things you can be taught. As a driver, your focus must be designated on getting to your destination safely. The driver must also keep in mind that not only are they driving for themselves, but they are driving for the people around them. In result, it is driver’s responsibility to be aware of your surroundings and the things around you. Although as a driver there will be times where you will have blind spot and accidents will happen that, but you wouldn’t be considered as a “distracted driver.” Drivers under the age of 20 have been involved in fatal crashes, and 19 percent of those were distracted by the use of cell phones (Distracted Driving Laws.)”
As a licensed driver everyone gets distracted while driving more than once. They’re either trying to send a text message, dial a number, or check notifications from social networks. All of those behaviors along with adjusting the radio, and putting on make-up are things that distracted drivers do while driving. According to Edgar Snyder & Associates there is a “large percentage of people who said they know distracted driving is dangerous, but they do it anyway” (Cell Phone & Texting Accident Statistics). In addition, to those distractions as humans we can only eliminate and enforce the law toward those behaviors.
As I mentioned before, there are some states doesn’t entirely enforce the law when it comes to cell phones. To illustrate my point, states such as Alabama, Pennsylvania, Virginia and a few others have yet to ban the use of using a handheld device while driving. In fact, Pennsylvania is one state where there aren’t any laws regarding to talking on a cell phone or sending a text message while driving a vehicle (Cell Phone and Texting Laws). With that being said, this where accidents are mostly likely to happen. In the years 2003 to 2006, car accidents from cell phone use lead to 50 deaths across the Pennsylvania (Cell Phone & Texting Accident Statistics).That being the case, the state of Pennsylvania needs to reconsider enforcing the law to limit the death percentage.
On the other hand, other states have stricken the law by making a primary and secondary enforcement to ban all cell phone and text messaging usage while operating a vehicle (Cell Phone and Texting Laws). With those intentions, they have also made restrictions to drivers by distributing specific license plates. For example, P1 – drivers can’t use their mobile phone while driving that includes using hands-free or handheld devices or doing text messages of any kind. P-2 license plate holders are only allowed to use hands free devices (P-plate and Learner Drivers). Over all, all of these procedures won’t benefit all of the other states if there isn’t anyone enforcing it. In order to decrease the percentage of the deaths from accidents, legislators must take action and put a law into effect. In other words, the percentage will continue to rise and more and more innocent people will die every day. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the percentage of drivers who were using a cell phone increased to 0.9% in 2010, and the percentage of drivers using a cell phone while holding a cell phone to their ears was 5%. Also, stats show that there were 3,092 deaths that were distraction- related accidents (Cell Phone & Texting Accident Statistics). In contrast, due to the points that have been argued there are some who differ with my opinion on this issue. Surprisingly, many device mangers create these apps which distracts drivers while there driving. Device makers and auto companies acknowledge the risks, but they aggressively develop and market gadgets that cause distractions (Driven to Distraction). As a result, these manger’s have knowingly continued to make numerous apps which have led to distractions. Now in contrary, I can’t blame the device mangers for everything. Every driver’s as the choice to decide whether or not they want to use a cell phone while they are driving. Though if the is law is enforced then they wouldn’t have a choice. In order to prove to these distracted drivers legislators must take this issues seriously and begin to take action.
All of these statistics show that the result of how dangerous the usage of a cell phone can be. It has done harm to many families and friends, as well as communities. Expressively, there aren’t enough stories that can’t be told on how cell phones have ruined numerous lives, but it can be stopped. Generally speaking I think it will bring warmth to the families who have lost relatives to this type of accident. In result, that is why I argue that it should be a law in every state. Especially, in areas that are populated with the new generation because they are the drivers in town. The goal to of this argument is to make drivers understand the pros and the cons of driving. Though, the only way to achieve that goal, is to create a policy that enforces the law and . In addition, the law should also have consequences to those who choose to disobey the law. . In conclusion, with the fact that I have mentioned I argue that the use of cell phones should be banned in every state and those who disobey should be penalized.
