The Respect of Soldier's Rank
In the U.S. Military services, rank determines who gets to tell whom what to do. The higher one 's rank the more authority (and responsibility) they have. U.S. Military personnel fall into one of three categories: (1) enlisted members, (2) warrant officers, and (3) commissioned officers. Warrant officers outrank all enlisted members, and commissioned officers outrank all warrant officers and enlisted members.
"Rank" and "pay grade" are closely associated terms, but not quite the same. "Pay grade" is an administrative classification, associated with a member 's pay. "Rank" is a title and denotes the member 's level of authority and responsibility. An E-1 is the lowest enlisted pay grade. That person 's "rank" is a "Private" in the Army and Marine Corps, an "Airman Basic" in the Air Force, and a "Seaman Recruit" in the Navy and Coast Guard. I should also probably note here that in the Navy and Coast Guard, the term "rank" is not used among enlisted Sailors. The proper term is "rate."
Through the ages, the badge of ranks have included such symbols as feathers, sashes, stripes and showy uniforms. Even carrying different weapons has signified rank. The badges of rank have been worn on hats, shoulders and around the waist and chest. The American military adapted most of its rank insignia from the British. Before the Revolutionary War, Americans drilled with militia outfits based on the British tradition. Sailors followed the example of the most successful navy of the time -- the Royal Navy. So, the Continental Army had privates, sergeants, lieutenants, captains, colonels, generals, and several now-obsolete ranks like coronet, subaltern and ensign. One thing the Army didn 't have was enough money to buy uniforms.T o solve this, Gen. George Washington wrote, "As the Continental Army has unfortunately no uniforms, and consequently many inconveniences must arise from not being able to distinguish the commissioned officers from the privates, it is desired that some badge of

Another way in which the rank structure is viewed is that of a pyramid. The reasoning behind this is that the person who is in charge sits at the top of the pyramid and commands all those who are below him. This happens by first the commander would have his sub commanders, this forming the second level of the pyramid, to issue orders too. And from there the order from high to low rank forming and ever expanding pyramid until it reached the lowest rank and there by forming the lowest and biggest level. This allows for orders to be quickly and effectively issued to the troops. It also allows for the…

The purpose of this essay is to further my knowledge of the Army NCO support channel, chain of command and why we as Soldiers use them. It is also to inform the parties that may be what I feel loyalty, dedicated service and also my interpretation of Military bearing and Discipline. I am explaining the importance of obeying a lawful order from an NCO and performing that order in a timely manner. The NCO support channel is designed to be subordinate to and supportive of the chain of command. The NCO support channel is not an independent channel. It is mandatory of the users of this channel to ensure that the chain of command is kept informed of actions implemented through the NCO support channel and to eliminate the possibility of the NCO support channel operating outside of command policy and directives. The NCO support channel is used for executing the commander’s orders and getting routine, but important, jobs done. It is used however most often to effect policies and procedures and to enforce standards of performance, training, appearance and conduct. Although the first sergeant and command sergeant major are not part of the formal chain of command, leaders should consult them on individual soldier matters. There are many area that the NCO Support Channel does to assist the chain of command. The NCO support channel ensures junior enlisted maintain a professional ethic. Respect and integrity, what really do those mean? I could look up those words in the Oxford English Dictionary or Websters, or Dictionary.com and give a scientific, perscise and exact answer to these words. And while that tells you what they mean, does that really give their meaning. Well by Dictionary.com's standards respect is a noun that means to hold in esteem or honor, and to show regard or consideration for. And Dictionary.com says that integrity means an adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character, honesty, and the state of being whole, entire, or undiminished as to morality. The Army on the other hand has their own, similar, but specific definitions for these words, they call values, and are one of the seven Army Values that are at the core of how the Army expects each and every soldier to live and act. To the army Respect, is straight forward, treat someone as they should be treated. Simple enough. Integrity on the other hand is a little more in depth. To the Army Integrity is doing what is right, legally and morally. But what do all of these words really mean? What do they stand for? Why do they matter?…

Respect, especially in the Army is a very important value to live by. It is much more than just talking kindly and listening to someone. It is the process of taking into consideration someone’s emotions, feelings and needs. You must also focus on their ideas, thoughts, and preferences. It is showing someone that you value their time; that you care what they have to say. Showing someone respect allows that person to know and acknowledge that you are tracking them and that you comprehend and believe in what they are saying, It is important to allow someone to feel your respect for them. It will ease the conversation and create trust. Behavior and attitude will allow the person demanding respect to feel that respect. When we respect each other, there are fewer conflicts. People get along easier and avoid the un-necessary drama associated with a lack of respect. For those of us in the military, this is very important.…

A Noncommissioned Officer's duties are numerous and must be taken seriously. An NCO's duty includes taking care of soldiers, which is your priority. Leaders must know and understand their soldiers well enough to train them as individuals and teams to operate proficiently. This will give them confidence in their ability to perform well under the difficult and demanding conditions of battle. Individual training is the principle duty and responsibility of NCOs. NCOs are responsible to fulfill not only their individual duties, but also to ensure their teams and units are successful. NCOs are accountable for your personal conduct and that of your soldiers. Noncommissioned officers have three types of duties: specified duties, directed duties and implied duties: specified duties, direct duties and implied duties.…

The Army’s way of balancing leader’s roles is by having a rank structure. The rank structure denotes the leader’s role and level of authority and responsibility. With that role comes expert knowledge and work. Leader development is crucial in maintaining a balanced profession. This allows the Army to conduct business in a more organized way. When the leader’s roles are not balanced it makes it difficult for the Army to conduct operations productively. Equally important, such unbalance can affect the trust of our American people as much as the Army’s culture.…

There are many reasons why a soldier, (doesn't matter the rank) should obey orders from anyone above him or her in the chain of command. Sometimes its good to listen to people soldiers below you too because they maybe smarter at the task then you are. One reason is that the military is revolved around higher ranking soldiers leading the lower ranking soldiers, they’re more experienced in the military then I am and been deployed more than i have. If everyone in the military just did their own thing then we wouldn't be a successful army and then our country wouldn't be as strong as it is. Every higher up gives an order for a reason, we may not like the reason but in the end most of the orders and decisions will be smart ones i guarantee. We were taught as children to obey our higher-ups. Starting from our parents, teachers, managers, police officers and etc… So how does this relate to the military? Well, when a person enlists in the United States Military, active duty or reserve, they take the following oath, “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.” Right there you are making a promise to the United States Military. Before you or I even put on the uniform, you promise you’ll obey the orders of the President and the orders of the officers appointed over you. Military discipline and effectiveness is built on the foundation of obedience to orders. Brand new privates are taught to obey, immediately and without question, orders from their superiors, right from day one of boot camp. Almost every soldier can tell you that obedience was drilled into their…

I was in the military so I will explain the rank structure and how they translate in the civilian world. All military branches have a rank structure that is used to designate each member grade in the military. Each military branch is made up of enlisted members and officers depending on your rank more authority and respect is given. Enlisted rank goes from E1-E9 and the officer rank is O1-O12. Lastly, a generalized explanation of military rank structure is: Officers are Executives & Managers, Warrant Officers are Subject Matter Experts & Technical Advisers, NCOs are Middle Management & Supervisors and Non-NCOs are the…

When Washington assumed the role as Commander in Chief of the fledgling Continental Army in 1775, it had adopted the British model of organization. There were basically four enlisted grades, sergeants, corporal, musicians and privates. The musicians were fifers and drummers, who of course directed the linear movements of the Army. If the sergeants, corporals and privates were the combatants, it could be a stretch to argue that those musicians were the Army’s first “specialists.” Though no special rank insignia signified enlisted soldiers of that era, Washington directed that sergeants and corporals would wear epaulettes sewn on their right shoulder, red for sergeants and green for corporals. During the winter of 1776-1777, Washington ordered the establishment of three artillery regiments. In the Army’s 1967 comprehensive Enlisted Grade Structure Study noted, “Artillerymen were recognized as specialists from the start and were given higher pay than Infantryman.” It also noted a need for other “specialists” in the enlisted ranks to perform certain technical skills for the artillery. During this period service and support tasks were typically performed by civilians or detailed enlisted soldiers from the line. When Gen Washington ordered the formation of three artillery regiments, he directed one regiment to be “artificers” to be employed in performing “essential specialist services” for the other two. These men were to be later known as “enlisted men of Ordnance” instead of artillerymen. The artificers included carpenters, blacksmiths, wheelwrights, turners, tinmen, harness makers and farriers. In 1777 the Congress noted the need for a “slightly different organization” in providing a regiment of Cavalry. The regimental staff was organized with a saddler, and a trumpet major, and each company had a trumpeter and a farrier. The famous “Blue Book” by MG Freidrich von Steuben, published in 1779, listed duties of…
