The Relationships Between Michael Porter’s Theory of Competitiveness and Economic Development of Nations, Regions, and Cities and the Economics of Innovation

Eighteen years ago in his masterpiece “The Competitive Advantage of Nations” Michael Porter developed a model to analyze the competitiveness and economic development of nations, regions, and cities, a model that is still a milestone in this field of enquiry. In this work I will try to show how that theory about competitiveness is related with some important aspects of economics of innovation, also in the light of the already visible effects of globalization.

Introduction
I will first explain the effects of globalization as Kotler identified them in the last edition of his best-seller; then I will briefly resume the main concepts of Porter’s theory of competitiveness, showing two examples of how his national view of industrial systems can help in the understanding of success of nations; therefore I will report some contributions from the economics of innovation that do not want to exhaustively resume the findings of the work of Antonelli but only show how some of them can be related with the strategic view on firms definitely imputable to Porter and his followers. In the conclusions I will identify the role of governments and institutions as an engine for growth and innovation, along with the role of competitors and the research of competitiveness within a national system but with a global perspective.

Globalization
Many authors, from many studying fields, say that nowadays we are in the era of post-globalization, that’s to say that it is already possible to see the main results of this process:
• technological progress has gained impressive rates;
• competition is no longer exclusively local-national;
• the marked development of ICT has increased the need and the usage of information as a competitive tool;
• the Internet has an unexpected (at least up to the last century) development which essentially empowers the customer giving him: o access to information, the ability to more carefully manage decision-making processes; o global vision, as a round the

    According to Porter, a nation attains a competitive advantage if its firms are competitive. Firms become competitive through innovation. Innovation can include technical improvements to the product or to the production process. Four attributes of a nation comprise Porter's "Diamond" of national advantage. They are: factor conditions, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, and domestic rivalry. Factor conditions refers to inputs used as factors of production - such as labor, land, natural resources, capital and infrastructure. Switzerland was the first country to experience labor shortages. They abandoned labor-intensive watches and concentrated on innovative/high-end watches. Japan has high priced land and so its factory space is at a premium. This lead to just-in-time inventory Sweden has a short building season and high construction costs. These two things combined created a need for pre-fabricated houses. Demand conditions states that a sophisticated domestic market is an important element to producing competitiveness. For example the French wine industry. The French are sophisticated wine consumers. These consumers force and help French wineries to produce high quality wines. Related and supporting industries states that a set of strong related and supporting industries is important to the competitiveness of firms. This includes suppliers and related industries. This usually occurs at a regional level as opposed to a national level. Examples include Silicon valley in the U.S., Detroit (for the auto industry) and Italy (leather-shoes-other leather goods industry). In Porter's case domestic rivalry is intense competition that spurs innovation.…

    When a company enters a market, it wants to be successful. Unfortunately most firms fail unless they have an advantage over there competitors. Yet, one question arises; how does one obtain this competitive advantage? One issue made clear by two major authors Teece and Porter suggests that “competitive advantage is at the core of a companies success. Yet how this advantage is achieve or maintained is where these two authors differ. We focus on the theories of Porter and Teece as the premise of the argument. It is clear that Porter claims that a company’s actions combined with their environment determines their success. On the other hand, Teece argues for the importance of dynamic capabilities (sensing, seizing and managing threats/reconfigurations) as central to attaining and sustaining competitive advantage. This essay evaluates these theories from an innovation studies perspective. Although innovation studies may not be a subscribed field, innovation is critical to the study of business. Seeing how changes in technology have caused small endeavours to become industry empires, the study of innovation is critical in understanding successes and failures. How does one know if a framework can incorporate innovation or could be applied to innovative/dynamic contexts? This paper argues that there is an inextricable link between innovation and learning. A theoretical framework that does not account for either learning nor change, but lacks a necessary theoretical foundation to incorporate or analyze innovation. Learning is important yet, overlooked by many within the business sector. Thus, the argument presented within the context of this paper outlines how Teece’s paradigm of dynamic capabilities has space within its theoretical framework to account for innovation.
