The Rape of Shavi-An Analysis from an Intercultural Point of View

Buchi Emecheta is a Nigerian-born writer. She was born in Lagos in 1944 and since 1962, she has been living in England. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and for a while, she worked as a sociologist. A writer, a lecturer, a college teacher and a sociologist, Emecheta is considered one of the most important African feminist writers.
As far as her career as a writer is concerned, she is the recipient of numerous awards. Among her most famous novels, the following ones are worth mentioning: In the Ditch (1972), Second-Class Citizen (1975), The Bride Price (1976), The Slave Girl (1977) and The Rape of Shavi (1985).
In this presentation, we are going to focus our attention on her 1985 novel, namely The Rape of Shavi. The title of the novel is deliberately ambiguous and, at first sight, it foregrounds the idea of physical abuse. However, another level of interpretation surfaces after a complete reading and an in-depth analysis of the novel: the entire novel revolves around the idea of cultural despoilment, of stripping a nation of its cultural values. The novel itself can be read as an allegorical story, a parable emphasising the harmful effects engendered by the cultural encounter between Self and Other. Here, the Self is represented by an ethnic group named the Shavis, located in an imaginary sub-Saharian country, while the Other is represented by a group of Western European people who left their country, fearing a nuclear explosion. The moral of this parable stands out conspicuously: people should preserve their cultural identity, they should not let themselves be driven by the will to power, they should keep intact their ethnic, linguistic, psycho-behavioural peculiarities, otherwise, their demise is imminent and uncontrollable.     In the novel Segu, Maryse Conde beautifully constructs personal and in depth images of African history through the use of four main characters that depict the struggles and importance of family in what is now present day Mali. These four characters and also brothers, by the names of Tiekoro, Siga, Naba, and Malobali are faced with a world changing around their beloved city of Bambara with new customs of the Islamic religion and the developing ideas of European commerce and slave trade. These new expansions in Africa become stepping stones for the Troare brothers to face head on and they have brought both victory and heartache for them and their family. These four characters are centralized throughout this novel because they provide the reader with an inside account of what life is like during a time where traditional Africa begins to change due to the forceful injection of conquering settlers and religions. This creates a split between family members, a mixing of cultures, and the loss of one’s traditions in the Bambara society which is a reflection of the changes that occur in societies across the world. The novel immediately projects the fear and misunderstanding felt by the people of Bambara due to the unexpected early changes that are taking place in Africa. “A white man...There’s a white man on the bank of the Joliba” is exclaimed by Dousika’s pregnant wife Sira (Conde 5). The family is instantly struck with a curious mind but also one that is uneasy. The sight of this white man causes great despair already for the man of the house Dousika: “White men come and live in Segu among the Bambara? It seemed impossible, whether they were friends or enemies!”(Conde 10). The unexpected appearance of this white man marks the beginning of anguish for Dousika and his four sons, especially for Dousika at first for he is embarrassed by the council due to this stranger’s intrusion. We witness the pinnacle of these “extreme indignities” in the cutting of Zitkala’s hair which degrades her “like a coward” and cuts her from her people. Her “cries” and “moans” of anguish, as well as the reference to her mother in the passage reach out to the readers and remind them that while Indian, Zitkala never ceased being that which she truly was: a human being. Such profound exposure to humanity challenges any racist notions and leaves us completely shaken. Finally, at the conclusion of this terrible episode, Zitkala reveals her main point about the nature of institutionalized assimilation and race: “I was only one of many little animals driven by a herder.” (Sa 437). This sentence precisely expresses the relationship between assimilators and native Indians. By placing such a bold statement at the end of her intense passage, Zitkala juxtaposes all of her human expression, her pain and defeat, with the dehumanization that the Indian tribes had to undertake. Furthermore, by representing her narrated self as “one of many little animals driven by a herder,” Zitkala vividly illustrates that westerners dehumanized a peoples the kind of relationship that western assimilators and native Indians had according to the instituted rules of race. In the novel, Alice Walker strives to make people aware of the horrific effects that female circumcision (genital mutilation) has on the African community and others throughout the world. If there is a single novel that could convince anyone of Alice Walker’s place as one of the most important writers and thinkers, it has to be Possessing the Secret of Joy. The book is certainly a descriptive example of the old saying “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” One may sway away from this book because of the subject matter – ritual female genital mutilation (FGM) or female circumcision. It is important to look into the “whys” of the custom. This novel speaks for all women who have wrongly submitted either “freely” or through force to physical, psychological, and /or emotional violence (Schaller). Alice Walker makes a strong statement against female circumcision with the hope of bringing a worldwide end to the procedure. Her voice sets an example of trying to help so many young girls protect themselves from a harmful tradition. Female circumcision is not about a bond between women or an empowering ceremony- it is based on fear and social pressure (Alice Walker: Video). This procedure has raised a world outcry against females as a form of torture and violence. Perhaps more than anything else in Possessing the Secret of Joy novel, this breaks my heart. At one time or another, everyone has experienced some degree of frustration at failing to connect sexually to a loved one, but imagine the horror of having that intimate connection cut off by an intentional, brutal procedure.
