In the story “The Ransom of Red Chief” The two characters Bill and Johnny, or the Red Chief, as he likes to be called, do not get along very well, or rather, Bill is not very fond of Johnny at all. This is for a multitude of reasons, like the time that the other character Sam is off doing things like mailing letters to Johnny’s father, Bill is forced to look after Johnny, and has to play a few games with him. Like for instance the time that Johnny pretended Bill was a horse and rode him around for awhile. This would be enough for most people to just want to be away from this child as quickly as possible, but Johnny also repeatedly attacks him, barely stopped by Sam. Whether on purpose or in the play world, Johnny tries to scalp Bill and bash…

The main character is Jesse, who is also the narrator of the story. The author uses Jesse to describe the background of the story, such as they are on a fifth grade camping trip and his two friends Dillon and Dylan come across the topic of aliens. “Aliens?” I said. “No way. I’m too old to believe in that kind of stuff.” After their small talk they went camping and ate. Later when the boys went to go to sleep, they saw something in the sky and the narrator said, “I looked at Dillon and Dillon looked at Dylan and Dylan looked at me, and I’d never, in the seven years I’d known both of them, seen either of them looking so scared.” “In that moment, I knew that we weren’t alone in the universe. When the UFO got closer, we all realized it was just a regular old airplane about to land in the nearby airfield. Well, even then I still knew we weren’t alone, and neither Dillon, Dylan, nor I—I can guarantee it—slept more than a moment during that long and memorable night.” The boys were now believed in aliens. The author used one of the boys to narrate the story which expresses their emotions more because the narrator talks to the other characters. Therefore, having the author use first person to tell the story, develops the characters in a more distinct…

This paper is a discussion on my worldview and my personal beliefs about God and creation. I will be contrasting it with a secular writing, the “Ransom of Red Chief” by writer O. Henry. I will discuss how I came to form these views, and defend each of my arguments with examples from the bible and similar writings. A quick summary of what I believe about God, creation, humankind, epistemology and ethics are as follows. I believe God is all powerful and all knowing, and loves his creation enough to sacrifice his son for it. I believe he made people in his image to worship him, and I believe we need a personal relationship with him to be saved. I believe we know things through looking at the bible and the world around us and using basic logic to tie it together. What I believe about ethics is that every person was created in God’s image and the world also created by him, so we must treat both respectfully and as God tells us to in the bible.…
