The Pumpkins: A Short Story
After a family outing to the village a few risings ago, the girls wanted to attempt pumpkin carving, like the human children. So early next rising we trudged through the local pumpkin patch, sinking into the mud that had already been blessed by the October rains, and each procured our favorite pumpkins. We all wobbled and slipped under the weight of swollen pumpkins, and laughed as we carried them all the way back to the car. It was a noteworthy family outing and both girls had so much fun, it was worth the muddy trudging we had to do. Yes of course we could have just poofed the pumpkins to us, but they wanted to experience it in a human way. I just could not allow my muddy girls to climb up into the car like that, so we cleaned them and ourselves in the way of our people and headed for home. …show more content…
They worked diligently to create their little masterpieces, especially Anya; she wanted hers to have horns. Finally Anastasia suggested using carrots, and then they set to task to figure a way to attach them. Anya's pumpkin now has lopsided horns in addition to its scowl. Anastasia's is more sedate: a curved smile, with triangular eyes. "It looks just like the pumpkin I saw on the doorstep of the funny ladies house now." She declared with pride.

“Your right it really does." Anya replies as they stand back to look at their pumpkins and chatter in their own special

After breakfast, the parents went out on the lake to have “adult time.” So my cousins and I decided to go riding back in the woods. Chelsea and I were doing wheelies on the four-wheelers. Wheelies are so fun; I get the feeling of butterflies in my stomach every time I do them. Jessica was riding her four-wheeler backwards. Johnathan was doing tricks on his dirt bike. We were doing all kinds of tricks and cool things. We even had races to see who could go the fastest. Then we found a spot in the dirt that was really wet. We saw that is was safe, so we started playing around in it. We did what most people call “mudding.” We all had a blast until Johnathan flooded his engine, and Chelsea started complaining about having mud all over her. So they decided to go home and let Jessica and I keep riding.…

She was from a small family who would do anything they could to be a part of the war effort. Mrs. Gilford, a woman who seemed to be living with them and helping take care of the children, made the turnips from her “victory Garden” so they could save money and not buy canned goods. Knowing she would get in trouble for not eating the turnips, Molly abandoned her plate till her mother came home and saw what she left behind. Being the supporter of the family, Mrs. McIntire Knew that times were hard, and turnips were not the tastiest thing in the world. So with a little sugar and words of wisdom, Mrs. McIntire turned the turnips into something delicious. With one obstacle passed, Molly had more important things to worry about, her Halloween costume. Not wanting to be wasteful, Mrs. McIntire shot down ideas that would be costly and outrageous, like Molly’s Cinderella costume idea. Instead, molly and her friends made grass skirts and paper flower necklaces and went as hula dancers. But as the night evened, Ricky sprayed all the girls with water, ruining their costumes. Wanting to get even with her brother, Molly and her friends came up with the idea to embarrass his as much as possible. So the three girls gathered all of the young boy’s underwear and dumped them on top of Ricky’s crush, Dolores. While they did this they chanted, “"I see London, I see France, Those are Ricky's underpants!” But it wasn’t too soon, Mrs. McIntire shows up, disappointed, and orders all the children to clean up the messes they’ve…

On the way out West, the family met a young adult named Tall Joe, who eventually becomes the captain of their group. Throughout the long trip, they lost many partners as their oxen died or they were shot by Indians. One day, Hattie and her friend, Pepper, are out playing and happened to stumble across what they thought were wild carrots and parsnips. They took some back as it was their turn to cook for the group. Back at camp, they got around their chores and started cooking. A little girl, Cassia, looked longingly at the “carrots and parsnips” and takes two bites before running off to play. Later, as they were rolling out pastry, they heard screams. They went in the direction of the screams and were horrified to find Pepper’s twin brother, Wade, and some of his friends lying on the ground, jaws clenched so tightly that nobody could pour charcoal and water into their systems to absorb the poison. In the end all of them except Wade died. The women were able to pour charcoal into his…

The smell of the delicious food reminds me of my mother homecooked meal and the cupcakes look beautiful with orange frosting and colorful, Halloween sprinkler on top of it. As people started coming in, I got to worry that we didn't have enough chairs as so many people there was.…

I remember being a little girl, sitting at the kitchen counter, watching my mother. She would be making preparations to cook us our wonderful meal. Eager to learn, I would ask, “Mom, what can I help with?” Then I’d jump down, off my chair and listen to her instructions with excitement. She put forth a lot of hours preparing and finishing everything before family and friends arrived. The kitchen would be filled with joking, laughter and storytelling. We would listen and sing to music as we helped and waited for our Thanksgiving celebration to start.…
