World War II took place from 1939 to 1945, and led to over 60,000 military and civilian casualties. The War affected every country in the world, so when it became clear that Germany and her allies were being defeated, the world breathed a sigh of relief. Unfortunately, the surrender that came from most German allies in the rest of the world was not a predisposition the Japanese shared. They refused to surrender until the United States dropped atomic weapons on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and August 9, 1945. On August 15, the Japanese announced their unconditional surrender, thereby ending World War II. The decision of the USA to use nuclear weapons to force the surrender of Japan was a controversial topic.
